The Diary: Sir Roger Moore: The Personal Collection Preview

Gieves & Hawkes and Bonhams co-hosted an exclusive private view to celebrate the up and coming sale of the Sir Roger Moore: The Personal Collection

Last night, outside the grand, pale frontage of No 1 Savile Row, passers-by were struck by a familiar pair of eyes glancing out from the vast windows. The iconic Peter Ruck portrait of Roger Moore — with 007, clad in white tuxedo, sipping from a brandy glass, a lit cigarette between his fingers — felt like a fitting entree to the evening taking place inside: a wonderful, rich coming-together of style and substance. The directors of Gieves & Hawkes in partnership with auction house Bonhams, were hosting a selection of very special lots from the upcoming sale ‘Sir Roger Moore: The Personal Collection’, and the tailoring house was filled to its high ceilings with remarkable objects, artifacts and outfits from the actor’s long and colorful career and life — from gorgeous black tie ensembles, to skis used in Bond’s alpine chases, and limited edition Omega Seamasters.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Moore’s first appearance as 007, and one imagines the actor, who passed away in 2017, would have been pleased with the general revelry on show (not to mention the excellently chilled Billecart-Salmon champagne and Monkey 47 martinis.) Guests included Ryan Barrett, Cyrill Ibrahim, Francisco Lachowski, Jay Rutland, George Blandford, and Erick Underwood.
