The Diary: Gentleman’s Journal and Luca Faloni celebrate New York’s tastemakers
Cashmere, claret and a distinctly international crowd filled the private dining room at Fouquet’s as we toasted our New York issue and the city’s brightest talents.

On a recent Thursday evening in Manhattan, to celebrate the launch of a distinctly New York flavoured issue of the magazine, 25 or so of the city's most interesting people gathered in the back room of Fouquet's, many of them draped in the buttery cashmere of Luca Faloni. So that's a London magazine at a Parisian hotel on a New York street covered in Torinese yarn. This city is the great melting pot, after all. It's also a place filled with so much talent and ambition that our own capital city begins to look like a small hamlet in Norfolk by comparison*. If you can make it there, you'll make it anywhere*, I always like to say, and a special feature in the magazine celebrated the individuals who are really making it right now — from chefs to designers to editors and strategists — many of whom were gathered in the red velvet depths of the Fouquet's private dining room that night. Meanwhile, Jordan Barrett (an Australian, if you're keeping track), posed in a gorgeous bottle green Luca Faloni suede overshirt next to his excellent cover shot for the issue — leading many guests to wonder whether they'd had one martini too many and were now seeing double. The jumbo shrimp was glorious and the steak was sumptuous — and everything was washed down, in a final salute to our humble home city, by many, many bottles of Berry Bros' Extraordinary Claret. There is some corner of a foreign land that is forever England!
