Yacht of the Week: Sybaris

The 2017 Sailing Yacht of the Year is up for sale:
a £77-million opportunity to escape the noise

During a recent trip to Monaco, I understood the point of a yacht. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky, the mercury was tickling 30°C and the Med was a mill pond.

It was one week before the iconic Grand Prix: tall stands were being erected either side of the road; travelling fans queued for restaurant tables; groups grappled over a piece of beach the size of a postage stamp; and supercars roared down Avenue d’Osende with revs thundering off the limiter. For many this is the allure of Monaco – the glitz and glamour – but I couldn’t help gazing out to sea longingly, to the faint figures on yachts moored far from the melee.

No fighting for sunbathing space. No ‘we’ve run out of X and Y’ from the menu. No noise. Instead it whispered of tranquility, comfort, luxury; the option to hop off deck to explore at a time that suited. Bliss.

And there are few finer yachts currently on the market than Sybaris, a stunning 70-metre palace on water that recently scooped the title of Sailing Yacht of the Year at the 2017 World Superyacht Awards. Judges noted that Sybaris was a “ground-breaking, world class sailing yacht [that] not only impressed with its sailing ability but also in the yacht’s supreme comfort and optimum division of internal volume”. She is a happy marriage of style and function.

On deck, cutting-edge sailing technology includes two carbon masts, a retractable keel, 3DL North Sails and a new captive winch system. PH Design of Miami was responsible for the interior; features include the striking use of titanium, with bespoke furniture paying homage to this yacht’s serious sailing culture.

At £77 million Sybaris is a major investment, but with this purchase comes not only one of the finest yachts to ever take to the sea, but the chance to escape the noise. And it’s hard to put a price on that.
