Yacht of the Week: The Swan Alloy 44

As Nautor Swan celebrates its 60th anniversary, the legendary Finnish yachtbuilder is entering an exciting new chapter with its largest and most ambitious sailing yacht to date.

I've always had a particular affection for Nautor Swan. There is something about the Finnish yachtbuilder that, for me, perfectly captures what sailing should be about. Beautiful design, exceptional craftsmanship and, above all, a genuine passion for being out on the water. It's a brand that has never needed to shout about its achievements, preferring to let its yachts do the talking. And what yachts they are.

Earlier this year, we celebrated Swan's remarkable 60th anniversary, looking back at six decades of some of the finest sailing yachts ever built. But while its history is extraordinary, it's what the company is doing next that has really caught my attention.

The Swan Alloy 44 might just be one of the most exciting new yachts we've seen in years. At 43.5 metres, it will be the largest Swan ever built and the first in an entirely new range of aluminium sailing superyachts. Unveiled ahead of this year's Monaco Yacht Show, the Alloy 44 represents a bold new direction for the brand, taking everything that makes a Swan special and introducing it to an entirely different scale.

For anyone who shares my admiration for the builder, this is a particularly exciting development.

Since Sanlorenzo acquired Nautor Swan in 2024, I've been fascinated to see how the Italian superyacht builder would approach one of sailing's most respected names. The answer, it seems, is to combine the best of both worlds: Swan's extraordinary heritage and performance credentials with Sanlorenzo's considerable expertise in building superyachts.

The first yacht has even been commissioned by Massimo Perotti, Executive Chairman of Sanlorenzo. Having owned numerous motor yachts, this will be his first sailing yacht. He’s obviously putting his money where his mouth is.

Of course, a yacht of this significance requires an exceptional designer, and Swan has turned to Malcolm McKeon. One of the great names in sailing superyacht design, McKeon has created something that feels entirely appropriate for the brand. The long, elegant lines, beautifully balanced proportions and unmistakably purposeful silhouette are everything you would hope for from a Swan, just on a much grander scale.

The specifications are equally impressive. Measuring 43.5 metres with a beam of 9.45 metres, the Alloy 44 has an estimated gross tonnage of 299 GT. A telescopic keel allows its draft to vary between 4.3 and 6.3 metres, offering the flexibility to explore shallower anchorages without compromising its sailing ambitions.

Inside, Studio Liaigre has been entrusted with the interiors, and I can't think of a more appropriate choice. The Parisian design house is renowned for its understated approach to luxury, favouring exceptional materials, beautiful proportions and quiet sophistication over unnecessary extravagance.

The construction itself is a fascinating collaboration between three countries. The aluminium hull and deck are being built in the Netherlands by Gouwerok Shipyard, before the yacht travels to Viareggio in Italy for final outfitting. Throughout the process, Swan's Finnish team are going to remain closely involved, to ensure that the brand's distinctive DNA is preserved.

There's also some clever technology beneath those elegant lines. A dual-energy system will allow the yacht to generate electricity while sailing, replenishing its onboard batteries and reducing reliance on diesel generators.

The first Alloy 44 is expected to be delivered in summer 2028, and I, for one, cannot wait to see her under sail.

What excites me most about this yacht isn't simply its size, technology or design, impressive as they all are. It's the fact that Swan is pushing into new territory without losing sight of what has made it such a special name for the past 60 years.

I've long believed that a great sailing yacht offers something that even the finest motor yacht cannot quite replicate. That connection with the sea, the satisfaction of sailing and the sense of adventure are difficult to put a price on. And if the Swan Alloy 44 can deliver all of that with the comfort and sophistication of a modern superyacht, then I suspect we're looking at something rather special indeed.
