Wine for the Weekend

Wine for the Weekend

The Journal brings you two red offers, both warm and easy drinking, making them the perfect addition to your traditional Sunday roast this weekend.

Anciano Gran Reserva Tempranillo, Spain, 2003, 13.0%

This Gran Reserva is born from the Tempranillo Grape, known as the ‘noble grape’ in Spain, it’s particularly renowned for producing full bodied reds that are full of berry flavours. This wine lives up to its great expectations with a strong characteristic of strawberry. From the Valdepenas, only grapes from 30-year-old vines are used and treated to a slow fermentation. After this there are a further seven years of maturation, including two in oak barrels. The end result is a soft and mature red that would make an ideal match to game, chiefly roast duck. On offer at £5.99 down from £8.99 waitrose.com

The Lodge Hill Shiraz 2010 Jim Barry, Clare Valle, Australia, 14.5%

This wine is from the first qualified winemaker to move to the Clare Valley, and subsequently has won numerous accolades. The Jim Barry estate is over 200 hectares and Lodge Hill is superbly suited to growing Shiraz such as this premium tipple. The taste is one of inky blackcurrants with a smooth tannis and a long and even finish. It doesn’t have the spice you would expect and therefore makes a very easy drinking wine that would complement grilled meats perfectly. majestic.co.uk
