In West Sussex, you’ll find the best of Britain. The county may sit, sparkling, on the south coast, but it’s bubbled to the top of the flag-waving, patriotic pile — boasting England’s longest beach at Littlehampton, peerless, fearless motor racing at Goodwood and, from Sandrocks to Strettington, some of the finest, sweetest strawberries grown in Britain.
And that’s not the county’s only claim to fruit-bearing fame. Just outside the village of West Chiltington, the pathfinding folk at Nyetimber have been growing prize-winning grapes on West Sussex’s chalky slopes since 1988. With varieties ranging from Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier to green Chardonnay, the brand’s success speaks for itself; handsomely bottled, topped with golden foil and exported out across the globe.
But it is back in West Sussex — this county of South Downs rambles and the Slindon Pumpkin Festival — where the winemaking magic started. And that’s why Gentleman’s Journal has teamed up with Nyetimber for our latest competition. With the promise of sparkling wine ahead, scroll down to win a trip to Amberley Castle for an overnight stay.

A unique luxury hotel, Amberley Castle can be found sitting pretty on the south side of the River Arun — set within a 900-year-old castle and enclosed by a 60-foot characterful curtain wall. Owned by the esteemed the Brownsword family, it has been turned into perhaps the most exclusive hotel in the South Downs by staying small, private and boutique. In fact, just 19 bedrooms make up the hotel, with cosy communal spaces including the incredible Queen’s Room restaurant and its barrel-vaulted 12th century ceiling.
Surrounding the castle, stunning gardens roll out across the county, with a wildflower meadow and tranquil corners playing host not only to guests — but also to two resident white peacocks. And these grounds and gardens are just a well-flung stone’s throw from the Nyetimber Manor Vineyard itself — where our winner and their lucky plus one will also get a chance to visit.
After a night at Amberley Castle — including dinner, a bottle of Nyetimber’s Classic Cuvee MV to enjoy in the room, and breakfast the following morning — our winners will make your way to the Nyetimber Estate for a once-in-a-lifetime tour. It’s a truly sparkling prize, and something that the British brand doesn’t offer publicly — making it a real ‘money can’t buy’ experience.
From a wander around the meticulously manicured vineyards to a sneak peek at the state-of-the-art vinifying facilities, it’s an exceptional, effervescent prize — and an experience guaranteed to give you a newfound appreciation of Britain’s homegrown, homespun sparkling wine industry.
The final flourish? As a souvenir of your trip to the Nyetimber Manor Vineyard, you’ll be sent away with a couple of choice bottles of Nyetimber. There’s the Nyetimber 1086 Prestige Cuvee, the first ever Prestige Cuvee made in England and one bubbling with rich textures and caramelised flavours. It’s also created using grapes from Nyetimber’s Manor vineyard; one of the vineyards our winners will be able to visit.
There’ll also be a bottle of the 1086 Rosé to take home. The pinnacle of the label’s rosé collection, and perhaps the best of all the brand’s bottles, this 2010 vintage is a celebration of Pinot Noir red fruit, with floral and pastry notes adding levity and a certain suppleness to the tingling texture.
Altogether, it’s a prize worth close to £1,000, and an exclusive, exceptional chance to experience the behind-the-scenes secrets of Nyetimber first hand. So raise a glass, enter below and cross your fingers — because West Sussex is waiting for you.
