Up your boot game
When winter arrives, boots become as much about practicality as they are about style
- Words: Harry Jarman
Many styles can be worn both down and up, even a suit if you think you’re Gianni Agnelli. This space has now become very competitive, with many brands making the boot the main focus of their autumn/winter campaign. As with all things, we advise that you stick to the brands with heritage. And so we have chosen five of our favourites from this season.
Inspired by traditional Italian hiking boots, Roccia Vet has gained cult status for its iconic design and rugged construction. The latest iteration has an improved lightweight sole for comfort in alpine environments and urban settings. They come with extra laces so you can switch between neutral and coloured to suit your personal style.
Crockett & Jones made military boots for the British army during both World Wars. It’s fair to say, then, that they can make a good boot that will stand the test of time. The Galway 3 is a new style for them, made from a material that ‘roughs-up’ during wear. Over time, it takes on a rugged, worn aesthetic, making it the most casual material in their collection.
We love these suede lace-up boots from the Northampton shoemaker. That’s because they stand out for all the right reasons with their tobacco suede and contrasting red laces. They’d look as cool paired with jeans in a mountain setting as in the city. The boots also come in brown leather for those wanting a bit more protection again the elements.
These are a firm favourite of ours at Gentleman’s Journal. They’re also a bit of an iconic shoe, with the style worn by the likes of Steve McQueen. Their design is incredibly well proportioned, which means you can easily wear them with a suit as well as jeans. They come in four colourways, but our pick has to be the dark brown suede.
These hiking boots have been designed in collaboration with Italian footwear label Fracap. Crafted from suede, they’re threaded with herringbone laces and rest on rubber lug soles that offer plenty of traction. The boots, that technically could be called a shoe, have already been spotted on the feet of all the right people this winter.
