The Ultimate Bachelor Pad Picks

The Ultimate Bachelor Pad Picks

Words: Violet

Ruth Wassermann, a designer at MADE.COM, agrees that the home is no longer the woman’s domain; the fellas are more and more interested in how to make their house a home. Here are her picks for the ultimate bachelor pad essentials.

The ‘bachelor pad’ is now a category we carefully consider and we’ll give you an insight into some of the trends we’ve picked up on. We know that men like bold, statement pieces, which will form the basis of the look of the whole room – like the Arc Rug for instance (£299). Guys tend to be slightly more impulsive with their purchase than the ladies who have perhaps pulled several looks together using Pinterest.

The number one thing for guys is function. They buy what they need and then will quite quickly identify what styles they like. For instance, a bachelor pad needs a great coffee table to house coffee table books and numerous remote controls. Our Hooper in Walnut is a best seller with the boys.

Size is also very important. Men are bigger in the most part than us ladies and so they like armchairs that are expansive so they can curl up or stretch out. A classic and sophisticated look with tactile materials is also coveted; for this we recommend the Rubens armchair (£399 and pouffe £99).

We’ve also noticed from our customers that men tend to be bigger collectors than women. They tend to go through periods of being interested in different things so storage options are important e.g. our Polygon shelves are perfect for displaying collectibles in a contemporary way.

A work space is also important in the ultimate lad pad – and what better than the walnut and oak Darcy desk – designed by Steuart Padwick who understands the importance of form and function working together.

A lot of our designer collaborations are with men and they have an element of wit and humour about the pieces they create. For instance, we recently launched a collaboration with fashion designer Philip Colbert of The Rodnik Band and the now infamous Shark Chair has been a huge hit with the boys.

Men are more influenced by pop culture when it comes to interiors – like films and music. We know that they love our Academy prints, particularly Steve McQueen and The Beatles (£99). Lighting is another chance to make a statement – the Broadway collection does that brilliantly. A bright light that packs a punch.
