A String of Naked Lightbulbs, executive produced by Ridley Scott and directed by Greg Fay is a new documentary that was commissioned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Mayfair’s Annabel’s, one of the most exclusive nightclubs in the world. Its members include Bryan Ferry, Kate Moss, Prince Andrew and Madonna – it’s exclusivity is unparalleled. Annabel’s was founded in 1963 by Mark Birley who named the club after his then wife, socialite Annabel Vane-Tempest-Stewart. The club quickly developed a reputation for being a place where the rich and famous could enjoy themselves, relax and drink without having to worry about being pestered.
The film is presents an understandably nostalgic look at the establishment, the names that have passed through its doors and the various incidents and scandals that have concerned its elite clientele. Various celebrities including the likes of Lady Gaga, Goldie Hawn, Anna Wintour and Naomi Campbell tell anecdotes about their favourite night out. The film is sentimental and down to earth – people talking about an institution they love and why they love it.
