Wine lovers will tell you that certain bottles and certain vintages will stay with them forever. Whether it’s linked to a special occasion in their life or the taste is truly mind blowing.
Once you have a taste of one of these unique vintages everything else will never taste as sweet. It’s not just the consumers who have these grail vintages either, the vineyards will have a favourite year. Although they might not always tell you.
Even for a winemaker with the heritage and history of Château Margaux, 2015 was something of a bumper year.
“When we discovered the vintage was going to be truly exceptional, we wanted to celebrate it like nothing before...”
Some 200 years on from the founding of its iconic neo-Palladian premises, the winemaker unveiled a striking new cellar and research lab designed by Norman Foster.
The weather and the terroir, meanwhile, clearly aware that something big was in the air, played up to their surroundings. By all accounts, 2015 is a genuinely spectacular year — perhaps the best in decades.
“When we discovered the vintage was going to be truly exceptional, we wanted to celebrate it like nothing before,” says Alexandra Petit-Mentzelopoulos, the current custodian of this ancient house. “And we decide to bring it to life with a unique bottle design.
The château is the star, so the gold foil accents the house — grand, but at the same time chic and understated.” The same could be said for the wine inside. “It is one of the most powerful and concentrated Château Margaux ever,” Alexandra notes, “but it is also among the most elegant and charming ones.
“People ask if we’ll ever do another one. My answer is a big ‘non!’” she adds. “There will never be anything this special again.”
