Food that packs a punch in the heart of Mayfair

Food that packs a punch in the heart of Mayfair

Growing up in the countryside, supper at a local pub was a right of passage consisting of wholesome pies, real ale, dogs running around tables and a roaring log fire; all of which made for the perfect place to spend a winter’s evening with friends. Upon moving to London, I thought that these kind of nights were going to be lost. Sure there are pubs that have a cosy atmosphere, but nothing quite like the ‘real deal’ you get, say in the depths of Dartmoor. So when I stumbled across The Punchbowl, it felt like a return home.

Situated in the heart of Mayfair, it is one of the area’s oldest pubs, priding itself on offering a place for their patrons to meet, dine and unwind, and serving only the finest in great British food – it has become a go-to venue for relaxed and wholesome mid-week suppers.

THE VIBE

Punchbowl2

From the cosy lit bar to roaring log fires, it is the perfect escape out of city life. I genuinely felt as if I was transported back to the countryside; the period features running throughout the interior successfully contribute to the relaxed and homely feel, and make for the perfect place to indulge in well-executed comfort food.

THE FOOD

SundayLunch3

The shredded roast duck served with a buttermilk pancake, candied mandarin and port reduction was the perfect winter warmer starter. Suitably indulgent, as traditional British cooking should be, it set the meal off to a delicious start. Next came roasted ballotine of partridge with salsify, roasted pumpkin and cumberland sauce, which was the ideal dish to accompany the setting of the bar. We finished with oatmeal raisin millionaire shortbread with a vanilla poached pear, which well and truly topped off a rich, decadent meal.

THE DRINKS

Be sure to try the Punchbowl 1750 ale, which they brew themselves.
