The Gentleman’s Journal guide to Masterpiece 2019

Your comprehensive companion to the capital’s unmissable art fair…

London is undeniably at its best in the summer. From the thrill of the Wimbledon Championships to the majesty of Royal Ascot, as the mercury rises, the capital becomes a must-visit for sporting prowess, social frivolity and cultural expertise.

Sitting fashionably amid the city’s vibrant summer calendar is the Masterpiece London art fair. Now in its tenth year, the artistic centrepiece of the season is ready to welcome an international crowd of curators, collectors and creatives to its home at The Royal Hospital Chelsea. And, if you’re lucky enough to be heading over to SW3 this week, we’ve curated an insider’s guide to help you make the most of what’s going on inside the famous marquee.

What to see...

The exhibitors at Masterpiece span all eras and disciplines and include many of the world’s most distinguished art galleries in a bid to demonstrate how a diverse array of work can be combined in a stimulating way.

From an early 19th-century map of the Chinese Qing Empire, to an original Joan Miró etching, our personal selection of highlights from the artworks on display this year is a testament to the breadth of this remarkable exhibition.

Where to eat...

A long day of walking amongst and admiring world-class art will call for some serious refreshment, and this year Masterpiece has teamed up once again with Urban Caprice — cherry-picking the best from its portfolio of world-class restaurants and private members’ clubs.

London favourites Le Caprice, Scott’s Seafood & Champagne Bar, The Ivy Chelsea Brasserie and The Sloane Street Deli are all represented at the Fair this year.
