Last night stars of the silver screen gathered en masse for the 87th Academy Awards – The 2015 edition of the Oscars was, many agreed, a great success. The controversy surrounding it was light-heartedly broken with an early joke from host Neil Patrick Harris and the Internet fodder was not in short supply. We’ve agonised over the many standouts, to collate and bring you the 5 funniest moments from last night’s ceremony.

Neil Patrick Harris’ Birdman Spoof

Personifying many people’s most clichéd nightmare, Neil Patrick Harris arrived on stage in his underwear, complete with bulge prop, in a nod to eventual Best Picture winner, Birdman. The ballsy move was also a subtle parody of Harris’ turn at presenting the Emmys in 2013.

Benedict Cumberbatch’s Flask

As the opening speech was being made, the camera cut to beloved British leading man Benedict Cumberbatch sipping away at a metal flask. The Best Actor nominee then mouthed at the camera, “Oh, go away” as he proceeded to continue swigging away.

Neil Patrick Harris’ Opening Performance

Harris’ hosting performance of the night went down well across all channels. Sidestepping the traditional opening monologue in favour of a signature song and dance, he pulled no punches with a number of mentions for Oscar films past and present.

The Lego Movie Appearance

Snubbed for a nomination for Best Animated feature, the Lego Movie still made an appearance at the Oscars with a performance with comedic rap group The Lonely Island. Lego Oscar statues were also handed out to the audience, a possible jibe at their lag of recognition at the ceremony.

Common Blanking Oprah

Selma’s exclusion from the big awards was a big talking point but they did get a win in Best Original Song for Glory. Co-artist Common went to collect the award, high fiving everyone but cast-mate Oprah, who was left standing with her hand in the air. She did get a hug off of the man of the moment in the end though.
