Is the tablet now dead?

Apple have finally given in. They have gone in a direction that they said they never would, increasing the size of their best-selling device.

Making a larger iPhone is of course a direct reaction to their competition, but it could have wider implications for the rest of the tech world. The iPhone 6 Plus’ screen measures in at 5.5-inches, which is a full one and a half-inches larger than the previous generation. Whilst this does mean that consuming media is a more enjoyable, fulfilling experience, it has also become much more difficult to use the device with one hand. There is of course the large issue that it is now encroaching on tablet territory, too.

Some may not like to admit it, but Apple have such a huge influence on the tech world that by introducing larger phones they have effectively killed off smaller 4-inch devices. It could be argued though that this move is the beginning of the end for tablets, too. Will an iPhone 6 Plus user need, or even want to carry around two devices?

With the 6 Plus emailing is easier than ever, watching video is more pleasurable thanks to the new Retina display, and the camera is better than it’s ever been. There are a number of other phones that arguably trump this too, including the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and LG G3. All three have sizeable screens and of course, with their ability to make calls, offer something that no tablet can.

What’s more, Apple’s iPad sales have slumped to half of what they were pre-Christmas last year. With the introduction of new, larger iPhones, less and less people will be buying tablets, perhaps signalling the end.
