If you’ve ever wanted to follow in the spiritual — and tuneful — footsteps of Bob Dylan or George Harrison, then we’ve got just the place for you.
Surrounded by forests and spread across 2.5 acres, The Kumaon is a private retreat nestled in a hidden nook in Kasar Devi, a ridge above the city of Almora. A den of serenity and tranquility, both musicians visited Kasar Devi along the so-called ‘Hippie Trail’ in search of spiritual enlightenment — and you could too…
The resort features 10 luxury villas, each with their own private outdoor spaces, and rotating glass walls which serve to maximise the view onto the forest. The main building also houses a well-stocked library, and an exquisite gourmet restaurant that offers a glorious view of the Nanda Devi.
The Kumaon design has been conceptualised and executed by Zowa Architects in Colombo, run by the much lauded and awarded Pradeep Kodikara and Jineshi Samaraweera. The design philosophy that guides the overall narrative is one that accents an absolutely stunning natural landscape while at the same time paying homage to local materials, tradition and culture.
In a nod to the native environs, indigenous pinewood is used extensively for the doors and windows, and copper and stone accessories handcrafted by local craftsmen adorn most of the living spaces. Almora has a fine tradition of weaving and all woollen fabrics for bedding and furnishing are designed and produced in the vicinity around the area.
In-keeping with the retreat’s philosophy of authentic experience and respect for local culture, all of the staff have been recruited from surrounding villages and trained to ensure that the property provides livelihood to the local villages. So pack your bags, jet off and load your iPod with some Dylan and Harrison: It’s time to relax.
