There’s nothing like a day at Goodwood Festival of Speed to remind a man of the beauty of the humble car. Everything is on show there – from crazy, inspired land speed designs that look more like rockets to gorgeous classics from between the wars. Goodwood is about the good things in life. But it’s not just a celebration of showy luxury – many of the cars on display at Goodwood are marvels of technology, design and innovation. They are cars, yes: but not the sort you’d pop to the shop to buy some milk in. These are cars as a philosophical concept. Goodwood harnesses the excitement of the early days of motoring, when high-speed land travel was the next great frontier.

Here, we have selected some of the cars that caught our eyes at Goodwood this year. They may not all be gorgeous, they may not all be desirable – but they are all highly original and exciting. Bonkers, brilliant and – occasionally – beautiful: Goodwood is a feast for the eyes and the mind.
