Our most stylish friends on where they’re travelling to this summer

From rural America to a village on the Atlantic coast, here is a handful of fashionable places to consider jetting to this season

It may have been quite some time since your last summer adventure – seeking out a fresh catch in the waters of Sardinia and sinking your teeth into some bunny chow in Cape Town must seem like a lifetime ago. However, being holed up at home and in the office comes with its benefits, namely a build up of unused annual leave.

If you’re thinking of carving out some time in the coming weeks to deservedly reset and tune out the noise, but are unsure of where to book a ticket to, we’ve asked a few of our most stylish friends – fashionable globetrotters who know how to separate wheat from chaff when it comes to seeing the world – about the destinations they’ve got pencilled in the calendar (including where they plan to stay, and what wardrobe essential they can’t go without packing).

From rural America to a village on the Atlantic coast, here are a few failsafe recommendations to consider jetting to this season.

David Gandy, Model

Which holiday destination are you planning to visit in the coming months?
My partner and children are part Greek and so we go to the island of Syros. It’s not massively touristy – it’s beautiful, quiet and known for its culture and food. I’m also off to Capri in the next few weeks, but this is for work not pleasure.

Which style item will you be packing?
I’d choose the Ultimate Short Sweat Set from the spring/summer range from my new brand, Wellwear. It’s perfect for slightly chillier mornings and evenings while on a boat.

Alessandro Squarzi, Creative Director at Fortela

Which holiday destination are you planning to visit in the coming months?
I am planning to take a big tour across the United States – I want to explore the real America. I will go to Santa Fe and Taos in New Mexico, and I am also willing to visit Wyoming and Colorado; the more I will be able to see, the happier I will be. The aim is to discover these territories and meet the people that live there, to see and to learn more about this side of the United States, the one that is far from the big cities that I have already visited many times. I’ve always wanted to do this trip, and I was planning to do it before Covid – now that I am allowed to do it, I really can’t wait.

Which style item will you be packing?
Western boots for horseback riding, and, of course, I can’t imagine leaving without my white jeans and white t-shirt, both by Fortela.

Charlie Casely-Hayford, Co-founder and Designer at Casely-Hayford

Which holiday destination are you planning to visit in the coming months?
Im going to Deià, Majorca. It’s somewhere I visited as a kid with my sister and parents and the memories are still very strong. I’m looking forward to doing the same with my children. We’ll be staying at La Residencia.

Which style item will you be packing?
I’m always looking for shoe options that I can wear with my summer suits and wide-leg trousers. I’ve always loved a chunky shoe, and the Baüscia by Velasca is a great modern option that works perfectly with a cropped trouser.

Lawrence Van Hagen, Curator of the ‘What's Up’ exhibitions

Which holiday destination are you planning to visit in the coming months?
I love traveling and I tend to choose the most off-the-beaten-track destinations for my trips. However, this month, I am very much looking forward to my upcoming weekend in Venice. I find the city so romantic and stimulating, the perfect weekend getaway for anyone who loves art, history and good food! I regularly do art exhibitions all around the world and earlier this year I found the most beautiful Venetian gothic palazzo, just in San Marco, overlooking the Grand Canal, so I decided to organise my next art exhibition there. In terms of hotels, if you are feeling romantic and looking for somewhere very luxurious and traditional, The Gritti Palace is your place to stay. If you are going with friends or you are looking for a young and cool ambiance, The Venice Venice Hotel is my top choice.

Which style item will you be packing?
For any summer destination and occasion, I always bring with me a handful of Vibi Venezia shoes, the traditional Venetian slippers brand. They are comfortable and stylish and frankly they look perfect with any outfit, any time of the day.

Francois O'Neill, Restaurateur

Which holiday destination are you planning to visit in the coming months?
Comporta, Portugal, which is on the Atlantic coastline, is a favourite of mine, with beautiful, spacious beaches, expansive dunes and pinewood forests. It’s a family holiday and we are excited to spend our days on the beach. It also has great restaurants and beach clubs, a young and vibrant community, and a relaxed and informal approach – it’s offbeat and upcoming which makes it an exciting place to visit. It is also close to Lisbon, which is currently exploding with creativity and is certainly worth a day trip to.

Which style item will you be packing?
Cubitts sunglasses are a favourite of mine, and Drake’s makes superb swimming trunks.
