In an era when ordering a book from the comfort of the sofa or downloading one straight to a tablet is de rigueur, there’s something to be said for those bricks-and-mortar bookstores that exist for the pure love of the written word. They’re more than just places to purchase the hottest hardbacks: they’re bastions of culture and temples of discovery for dedicated bibliophiles. Many of them also happen to be beautiful. Scroll on for a peek inside some of the most aesthetically-pleasing bookstores around the world…
Livraria Lello, Porto, Portugal
With its sweeping staircases, impressive art-nouveau architecture and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, it’s no surprise that Livraria Lello is one of Porto’s most popular tourist attractions. Rumour has it that J.K. Rowling, who lived in Porto in the ‘90s, drew inspiration from the bookstore’s grand interior when dreaming up the world of Hogwarts.
Daunt Books, London, United Kingdom
Arguably the most beautiful of all the Daunt Books branches, the independent chain’s Marylebone store is a must-visit destination for London locals and visitors alike. Set within a stunning Edwardian building, it boasts gorgeous oak balconies, a conservatory ceiling and a stained glass window.
El Ateneo Grand Splendid, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Set within a former theatre that once hosted tango legends, opera performances and film screenings, Buenos Aires’ El Ataneo Grand Splendid is brimming with old world luxury and Latin flair. The soft lighting, colourful shelves and quiet reading nooks make it a bibliophile’s dream.
Dujiangyan Zhongshuge Bookstore, Chengdu, China
Since it opened in 2020, Chengdu’s Dujiangyan Zhongshuge Bookstore has remained an Instagram sensation, thanks to its surrealist staircases, impressive tower book spirals and sculptural shelves. The labyrinth-like store features multiple reading areas so you can while away an afternoon in an architectural marvel.
La Increíble, México City, México
With its polished concrete floors, grid-like maple wood bookshelves and bursts of colour, La Increíble is a minimalist hot spot in the buzzy centre of México City. As well as serving as a calming place to peruse the latest art and design books, the space regularly hosts author readings and poetry open-mic nights.
Shakespeare & Company, Paris, France
Situated on the banks of the Seine, English language bookstore Shakespeare & Company is a cult-favourite among the city’s anglophone readers and writers. With its motto "Be Not Inhospitable to Strangers Lest They Be Angels in Disguise" emblazoned above the entrance to the reading library, the famous bookseller houses aspiring poets and artists in exchange for helping around the store.
