The Miramonti Hotel & Spa is the wellness retreat you deserve

High up in the Italian Alps you'll find a very special kind of luxury escape

When did mountain retreats turn from being creepy chintzy lairs into modern, minimal masterpieces? Take the Miramonti Hotel & Spa – there’s not a migraine-inducing patterned carpet, twee wooden panelling or twitching lace curtain to be seen.

In their place are light, breezy interiors, designer furniture and a salt-water infinity pool seemingly built for Instagram likes and multiple thumbs-up emojis.

Set in 30-acres of forested hillside in the Italian region of South Tyrol, the hotel is on a par with its surroundings in terms of beauty. And that’s a tall order when many of rooms look out onto the peaks of the Dolomites in the distance.

All the necessary boxes for a luxury hotel are firmly ticked here. Gourmet food from award-winning chef Massimo Gerome, wellness spa, fitness studio, beautifully designed rooms, ones that splice together traditional mountain materials with the thoroughly modern and functional.

Top billing though has to be the pool. Lined with slabs of volcanic rock and quartz, the architects Heike Pohl and Andreas Zanier wanted to mimic the ancient caves that dot the Alps.

Part Bond villain lair, part wellness lodge, the Miramonti makes for a perfect – and completely chintz-free – mountain escape.
