When did mountain retreats turn from being creepy chintzy lairs into modern, minimal masterpieces? Take the Miramonti Hotel & Spa – there’s not a migraine-inducing patterned carpet, twee wooden panelling or twitching lace curtain to be seen.
In their place are light, breezy interiors, designer furniture and a salt-water infinity pool seemingly built for Instagram likes and multiple thumbs-up emojis.
Set in 30-acres of forested hillside in the Italian region of South Tyrol, the hotel is on a par with its surroundings in terms of beauty. And that’s a tall order when many of rooms look out onto the peaks of the Dolomites in the distance.

Top billing though has to be the pool. Lined with slabs of volcanic rock and quartz, the architects Heike Pohl and Andreas Zanier wanted to mimic the ancient caves that dot the Alps.
