The pick: Nobody needs a clock, but you need this
Words: Alex Woodhall
“Nobody really needs a clock.”
It’s a bold opening statement from Dutch clockmakers LEFF that skips the bullsh*t and shifts the focus from functionality to form. In a world where the time is so readily available on everything, the ticker on the wall (and your wrist) has outlived its usefulness. But still, it’s nice to have them around anyway.
Crafted from stainless steel, LEFF openly admits to have far from reinvented the wheel with its tube clock. In fact the triad behind it freely acknowledge that this could have been done a century ago without too much difficulty – but it wasn’t.
Sticking to the Dutch mantra of keeping things normal and down-to Earth, the tube clock is the simplest idea that has turned out not only good, but achingly stylish. Produced in partnership with Piet Hein Eek, the dutch designer noted for his scrap wood furniture, the clock comes as part of a wider ‘tube series’, which also encompasses speakers and a watch.
Whilst you may not need it to tell the time, and probably won’t immediately notice when the battery runs itself out, the LEFF clock is more than just about telling the time. It’s a piece of art that’ll sit proudly on a bookshelf, mantle piece or side table, more so when mirrored by one of the speakers.
The tube clock is available in stainless steel, brass and copper.
