Interview: the one to watch, Sam Way

We caught up with the singer/songwriter to discuss the inspiration behind his music, and what we can expect from this latest track

Since Sam Way’s musical genius was discovered by the legendary Eric Hall (who helped launch the careers of Queen and the Sex Pistols), he’s been making waves all over the world for his lyrical know-how and stunning voice. His truly unique sound is what sets him after from an incredibly competitive crowd, and his brand-new single only proves his exceptional talent even further. We caught up with the singer/songwriter to discuss the inspiration behind his music, and what we can expect from this latest track.

I was Devon born, and moved to London when I was 21 to pursue a career as a model. I was scouted in the city when I was 16, and since then have developing my musicianship in tandem with my career in the fashion industry. I’ve just realised my brand new single, I’m good at card tricks and I have a weird obsession with Naruto.

I hope in 2017 my two careers come into some sort of alignment. One day, I’d also like to play Glastonbury – that’s a dream worth working for. My mum is definitely my biggest inspiration, she’s one of the best human beings alive. Relationships and experiences are mainly what inspire my songs; when I start writing, it often becomes quite an obsessive task. I try to bottle and capture that moment, though it may be long gone. I always find that reading inspires my writing, too.

My new single is a song that was born two years ago. Me and a friend (and fellow singer/songwriter) jammed out a few ideas and chords I’d been working on. We loved the imagery and idea of the ‘last page’ – what it means to be end up there and how you get there, and that became the core theme of the song. It’s a story of love, friendship and yearning; it’s about how sometimes you wish you could control fate just by writing it down. Billy Wright (the co-writer) and I both had some relationship problems going on at the time, so we found it easy to write from the same place.
