A gentleman’s guide to avoiding Christmas calories

'Tis a time to embrace the bulk and pile in the calories right? Not exactly…

A lot of gentlemen use this time of year as excuse to go crazy, devouring food and guzzling drinks for weeks on end. Aside from a few moments of feeling great and no doubt satisfied, you risk jeopardising your entire year of hard work in just a single month. To avoid having to detox too heavily in January – and to avoid excess weight gain – look no further…

Everything is ok in moderated portions, that goes for glutinous food and alcohol too. Having portion restrictions will help stop the overconsumption of ‘useless’ calories causing hormone imbalances which often leads to unwanted body fat storage. Alcohol carries 7kcals per 1 gram; making it the second most calorie dense nutrient to fats. Coupled with the fact that drinking calories is a pretty easy thing to do, which means you’ll quite easily rack up the calories if you don’t drink consciously. Top tip: a good way of moderating your calories is to track your daily intake using a food-tracking app such as My Fitness Pal. Try using the app in the lead up to Christmas day to help you keep your intake moderated and then kick back and do not count a single calorie on Christmas day… nobody should.

There’s only so much you can cut calories before you energy takes a hit too, which is why you need to keep active this time of year to help offset any additional mince pies that sneak into your mouth. Aside from regular weight training 2-4 times a week, try increasing your activity by walking more and reaching 10,000 daily steps. Walking is a great way of exercising without actually exercising; staying at a low intensity, walking is great for burning additional calories, helping you to stay lean this Christmas.

It’s safe to say that this time of year is when you’re most likely to be eating out more often than not, but it’s essential that you make sure you have a couple of meals in a week. Eating in restaurants only leads to temptation after temptation, and there are tons of hidden calories inside meals that initially seem to be relatively healthy. Learning how to cook is one of the greatest – and most attractive – skills a gentleman can have.
