It used to be that alcohol was a surefire way to haemorrhage your money – yet, these days, it seems as though it’s how your money can be made. According to a recent report by Bain & Company and Altagamma, fine wine now rivals jewellery and fashion as a key luxury investment, with the market having reached an estimated value of €30bn in 2024. Moreover, according to the Knight Frank Luxury Investment Index, wine outperformed art, cars and coins over ten years, demonstrating market resilience in the long term.

Founded in 2019, Decant Group, a global brand comprising several specialist Houses, aims to provide a trusted and tailored experience when it comes to wine-and-spirit investment, consumption and production. House of Decant, for example, is the premier retail arm of the venture that offers singular bottles, online features, and experiences; Decant Ventures, meanwhile, provides support to emerging talent within the industry.

Then, there’s Decant Index, a marketplace for collectors and investors to buy, sell and trade fine wine and spirits. Billed as an easy and affordable way to build your wine investment portfolio, this department offers three investment-grade Cellar Plans – starting from Bronze (£250 a month for membership) to Silver (£500 a month) to Gold (£1,000 a month) – with each curated monthly by the venture’s in-house specialists and customised to fit your tastes, goals and budget, whether you want to create a body of collectable bottles that you can pass down the generations, are looking to make a profit on your investments, or simply want a cellar you can slowly consume over time. To date, Decant Index holds more than £100,244,984 of assets in storage, has paid out £4,617,993, and has a membership of 44,000 and counting.

“The digital marketplace is a momentous step forward in making fine wine collectables more accessible,” says Alistair Moncrieff, CEO of Decant Group. “We have implemented advanced technology to create a platform that simplifies the purchase process while delivering real-time data and portfolio insights to clients.”

Moncrieff also notes, “We combine centuries-old traditions with current investment methods. Our platform goes beyond basic transactions to teach investors about fine-wine production, ageing, and market movements.

“We have invested seven figures in technology, ensuring our customer experience is at the forefront of what we do. Sub-par user experiences are simply no longer acceptable when customers are entering into a new market; we believe our success has come from the fact we understand what the customer expects to see and how they want to be spoken to.”

With a Cellar Plan, members get priority access to a curated selection of fine wines and extremely rare vintages, all while having the support of concierges and experts who track auction trends, global pricing and Wine Advocate scores so that you receive the best guidance on building out and diversifying your portfolio, adjusting according to market conditions and selling at the optimal time. There’s also an array of exit options, whether that’s selling privately or on the Decant Index marketplace, gifting, going to auction or having the bottle delivered to your home to uncork and enjoy.

Moreover, as you’d expect with any high-value assets, your collection will be fully insured and stored in bonded warehouses that have been licensed and audited by HMRC.

Easing the process even further is the fact that the platform’s app allows you to track your portfolio’s progress via an easy-to-read dashboard that displays up-to-the-minute data, including current valuations and market insights.

To pad out the oenophile experience, members are also invited to Decant Index’s exclusive events at 105 Piccadilly, where you can partake in wine and whisky tastings, as well as industry talks, mixers and networking socials.
