Cocktail of the Week: The Bloody Maria

You've heard of its Russian cousin, but now meet the Mexican variation...

We’ve most all tried a Bloody Mary at some point. From those haggard hungover mornings to civilised Sunday brunches, it’s a staple of the cocktail menu and as striking looking as it is tasting. But, for all the tomato juice you can drink, sometimes it’s a great idea to shake things up. Enter tequila.

Reinventing the classic cocktail, Patrón Silver Tequila are championing the Bloody Maria – a drink as subtly changed in letter as it is in spirit. Chucking the vodka out for tequila, this south-of-the-border tipple is a little sweeter than its Russian cousin, and considerably more flavourful.

The Bloody Maria will be served alongside Hawksmoor’s legendary Sunday Lunch Tribal Banquet at Lincolnshire’s Lost Village Festival at the end of August and, ahead of the event, Patrón have shared with us their exclusive recipe for the drink. So, grab a glass, uncork your tequila and get mixing like Mexico.

Begin with 4 oz of tomato juice, and mix this with half an ounce of fresh lemon juice. Throw in a dash of both Tabasco sauce and Worcestershire sauce, and a sprinkle of both salt and pepper.

Mix three parts of this tomato juice with one part Patrón Silver Tequila in a mixing tin, and then ‘roll’ the drink back and forth between the tin and a glass to thoroughly combine them. Strain into a fresh Collins glass – rimmed with either salt or a spice of your choosing. Garnish with a lemon wedge and celery stalk.
