Q&A with billionaire fashion designer Brunello Cucinelli

Growing up in rural Italy, in a childhood home without running water or electricity, Brunello dropped out of engineering school age 24 to forge his own path. Forty years later he is a billionaire fashion designer of his own label and a renowned philanthropist, donating up to 20 per cent of his profits through the Brunello Cucinelli Foundation.

Where do you find your inspiration?

The street and the people passing by have always been great sources of inspiration for me, as well as the words that my father used to repeat to me when I was still very little: “You must be a good man. Mind you, try to always keep your word.”

If you could own any work of art in the world?

I would pick La Pietà by Michelangelo for its universal, extraordinary human message of motherly tenderness, which should inspire the relations of all human beings, in my opinion.

Which person do you admire the most?

I have great admiration for Marcus Aurelius, who in his life was able to think like a philosopher and lead like an emperor. There is a wonderful statement by him that I always carry in my heart: You should always live as if it was the last day of your life, but at the same time plan as if you lived forever.

Your ideal holiday destination?

Since I am forced to travel for business for three months a year, for me holiday means to stay at home, to be with my family, my friends and my books.

What are you most fond of?

My library, without a doubt, with all its books on all world philosophy and literature, but also with its special section devoted to culture, art and spirit of our beautiful Italian classical culture.

Your favourite garment?

A pair of white corduroy trousers and a cashmere pullover.

What are you most proud of?

I often think of my father and my grandfather and I can still see in their eyes the serenity of their soul. Maybe I have not changed at all and I am glad of that because I have never turned my back on poverty.
