The best destinations for October sun

Don’t close the doors on your summer wardrobe just yet

Autumn is upon us. For some, that may mean wholeheartedly embracing the coming season of scarves, hats, and overcoats. Others may feel the fleeting glimpse of summer sun retreating and wish they could turn back the clock.

Luckily for the latter, there are plenty of literal hotspots to escape to across the world. This is our pick of the best October destinations for lengthening your time in the sun.

A favourite in the GJ office, this Indonesian island is home to a vibrant arts community, matched only by the persistent 30-degree heat. Despite a slightly unpredictable monsoon season, Tripadvisor named it the world’s top destination in this year’s Traveler’s Choice award.

The UAE capital is often overlooked in favour of the more populous Dubai, but the difference in size is more than made up for by the bustling cultural and commercial centre. For holidaymakers, there are plenty of opulent parks, public beaches, and the city’s crowning achievement: the staggering, 220m long Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

Since hesitantly lifting travel restrictions to the sun-baked island, tourism has surged in the last decade, as travellers come to soak in the sun, sights, and thriving music scene Cuba has to offer. Not to mention their legendary export, Cuban rum…

Often voted as one of the world’s most beautiful islands, Santorini’s volcanic cliffs and slopes – alongside a sparkling lagoon and fishing harbour – entice millions of visitors each year. Its flourishing wine industry and famed tomatoes (yes, really) make the Greek principality well worth a visit.

We couldn’t leave off Hawaii: a leafy beach paradise of almost mythical proportions. The annexed American state may be the perfect holiday spot for surfing, sunning, or experiencing the delights of Polynesian culture. The Hawaii International Film Festival also runs each year in the fall.
