You won’t find many tourists descending on Wolf Creek’s quiet slopes in winter, but what this stripped-back local haunt lacks in facilities it more than makes up for in soft, soft snow. Wolf Creek boasts 1600 acres of ski terrain, with enough scope and variety for any level of experience, and the highest snowfall in the western state. Colorado’s best-kept secret.
Best for – the peaceful retreat
For those with more cosmopolitan tastes, this bustling resort sits just above the town’s main street – meaning you can break up your time on the slopes with shopping, fine food and plenty of nighttime entertainment. And if that doesn’t sway you, those holidaying in late January will also coincide with the Sundance Film Festival. You’re sure to find something for everyone.
Best for – the serious shopper
Looking for something more challenging? Jackson Hole’s focus is on serious terrain, and it attracts hardcore skiers and boarders from around the globe. We recommend lodging in the town itself, though; the resort itself can only fit so many.
Best for – the experienced skier
Having hosted the 2012 Winter Olympics, Deer Valley has some serious credentials and certainly lives up to the hype. The prices may be as steep as the slopes, but its commitment to both exclusivity and truly exceptional service is something you won’t get anywhere else. Just don’t try sneaking in your snowboard – this is one for purists only.
