7 things to give up for guaranteed success

Are these habits getting in the way of your success?

Success is just as much about selflessness as anything else. Unknowingly, you could be stopping yourself from reaching the pinnacle of your career because of a couple of things that you’re unwilling to let go of. Here’s what to give up to ensure guaranteed success…

If you want success, you need to stop making excuses for everything. Forgot about a meeting? Late to one? Forgot to follow up with a phone call? There is no excuse for laziness or tardiness. You are responsible for your own life and there’s no advantage in making excuses – ever.

Of course, we all want to strive to be the best we can be, but aiming for a perfect outcome every single time is completely unrealistic and the easiest way to set yourself back time and time again. You have to be willing to make compromises, particularly on time, if you want to be successful and often perfectionism can get in the way of that.

The lifestyle you lead is pretty key to the outcome of your success: if you’re at the pub every night and waking up late, groggy and hungover, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out just how unproductive you’re going to be. Equally, junk food, cigarettes, sugar and excessive caffeine are going to do nothing for your mental state and therefore your productivity. Take a step back and figure out which parts of your lifestyle need changing.

Constantly comparing yourself to others around you is completely unproductive. Yes, paying attention to the competition is important if you want to get ahead of the crowd, but comparing yourself – and trying to change your direction as a result – is more likely to end in failure rather than success.

Newsflash: you are the only person responsible for your own actions. If something’s gone wrong at work and you had something to do with it, it’s undoubtedly better to accept it, move on and focus on solving the problem rather than pointing the finger at anyone but yourself. Being unable to accept responsibility is an act of immaturity and if you’re looking for success, you need to leave this at the door.

Unfortunately, life doesn’t always go in the direction we hope or predict. Complaining about whatever goes wrong, whenever it does, is a complete waste of your time. Channel your frustrations into making sure the outcome of a project is the very best than it can be and remember: no one likes a complainer.

If you want to be successful, you have to look at life as a bigger picture. Focussing only on short-term solutions rather than long-term goals is guaranteed to land you in too many sticky situations. Of course, your focus may be required to quickly resolve a problem that’s gone wrong, but you also need to accept responsibility for long-term goals if you ever want to reach the pinnacle of your career.
