7 reasons why you’re not as successful as you should be

You may have had a recent moment when you’re not quite where you feel you should be. Not far enough up the ladder, or perhaps in the wrong line of work completely? Success isn’t necessarily about the zeros in the bank account, maybe you’re just fed up of working for someone else but haven’t worked up the cojones to take the leap out on your own?

Whilst many of us have these thoughts, few of us do anything to rectify the situation, here is what could likely be holding you back:

You think negatively

Cynicism is all well and good and natural for many, but there’s a difference between negative thinking and cynicism. Don’t be afraid of the failures and look to see opportunity in hardships rather than focusing on the difficulties in everything.

Distractions and discipline

Discipline will get you far. Sometimes you need to say no to the “one more drink” or the extra long and boozy lunch so you get what you need done and focus on birthing successes.

You overcomplicate

Remove the valueless details and focus on the bigger picture, don’t get bogged down in the minute detailing that’s making you inefficient and occupying your time and energy.

You don’t make decisions

Be bold, consider a decision and make it. Don’t deliberate forever. Make choices and solve problems, rather than making excuses or letting others take the lead.

You’re not taking risks

As long as you learn from those mishits and build from them, rather than letting them destroy you.

“26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” – Michael Jordan

That perfect moment hasn’t arrived

Don’t wait for everything to line up exactly as it needs to for you to take the crucial step to success. Make your own opportunities rather than waiting for them to fall in your lap as if success is a God given right.

You’re lazy

The moment hasn’t arrived, the opportunity hasn’t presented itself and the distractions are rife because you’re facilitating it all. Did you turn down a potentially crucial networking event to get blindingly drunk? If your evenings are spent in the pub or on the sofa in favour of chasing opportunities, or your mornings wasted to hangovers rather than in productive meetings — herein lies the club.
