5 ways to be more attractive this summer

Looking good in the summer isn’t quite as easy as it is in the winter, make sure you're at your most attractive with these tips.

Summer, it’s the season of warm weather, beer gardens and skimpier clothes. It’s a season where dating becomes that bit more casual and relaxed, few people are looking for something longterm, more some short-term fun. Whilst this idyllic picture of the season is all well and good, looking good in the summer isn’t quite as easy as it is in the winter. There’s no stylish overcoat to keep things covered up, the rising mercury is sending sweat glands into overdrive and unless you’ve spent the last 6 months working relentless on your fitness you’re going to be more day-old rump on the beach than wagyu ribeye.

Don’t fret however. If the winter was a little indulgent, there are plenty of ways to ensure you’re looking on point whilst the sun is out without having to turn back time and hire a crack team of personal trainers and nutritionists, or reportage your house on a new wardrobe.

Sweating is natural, it’s good for you, but it doesn’t have to drown you, or stink out the room you’re currently occupying. There are steps to take to stem the tide and ensure you’re smelling fresh throughout the hottest period.

Roll on an antiperspirant in the evening before you go to bed and then opt for a deodorant after you’ve showered in the morning. If you’re using an antiperspirant first thing, for those initial hours it’s not actually doing that much as it needs time to clog sweat ducts, hence why applying it at night works best. No, it doesn’t all wash off in the shower in the morning.

After you’ve cleared up those mistakes – opt for a summer fragrance that’s has served the test of time and remains a favourite of the noses of both sexes; No.89 by Floris takes some serious beating.

That doesn’t mean a whole new wardrobe, but to be smart with what you buy and wear. Sidestep synthetic fabrics as they aren’t breathable and will only keep all of that heat sealed in. Ditch the polyester and heavy wool suits in the week for a tropical weight wool or cotton blend tailoring. Leave the denim that’s served you so well during the early part of the year to take some time out and call up some lighter chinos. The same goes for shirts, look to linen for a top that wont cause you to sweat bullets all weekend long.

That means no lobster burns or panda marks around your eye. The sun’s rays are dangerous and you need to keep yourself protected, rather than slathering on the oil and burning in the insistence that it “will go brown”.

Get yourself some factor 30 suncream and an SPF moisturise and don’t stop reapplying where appropriate. Not only is sunburn dangerous and painful, but it looks bloody horrendous and irresponsible — the same goes for a farmer aping t-shirt tan.

Make sure your sunglasses suit your face shape. Just because everybody and their brother is rocking a pair of keyhole shades, doesn’t mean you should — especially if your face is rounded. You’re going to rocking a pair for pretty much the next few months solid, ensure they’re appropriate for all situations and if you’re unsure of what suits you best, check out our comprehensive guide – here.

The men’s grooming arsenal is deeper and better stocked than ever. There’s a myriad of creams and cremes to call on to get you looking better than ever – you don’t need to use them all at once. Get yourself a lighter moisturiser to use during the summer, rather than a heavy creme — it will only clog your pores as you’ll be sweating more and it won’t be able to escape. Similarly, look for a less viscous hair product. Shiny holds look a little off-putting during the warmer weather not to mention causing build ups as your skin sweats.

Whilst it may be tempting to go with an extra few sprays of fragrance to stave off any unpleasant smells during the warmer weather, that’ll only serve to choke those around you. Nobody wants to feel like they’re eating your scent. The usual 3 sprays maximum will be more than effective, especially as your body temperature will be up anyway making the smell more potent.
