Words: Gentleman's Journal
When work commitments demand more of your time, often keeping fit is one of the first things to fall by the wayside. If you’re lacking motivation, why not sign up to one of the following insane challenges? These trials are made to terrify even the most dauntless of athletes. These are not for the fainthearted…
TOUGH MUDDER
Although less than half the length of a marathon, Tough Mudder more than makes up for what it lacks in length with the inclusion of over 20 hellish obstacles over rough terrain. A global phenomenon since 2010, Tough Mudder can be found in locations all over the world, with typical obstacles including ‘Arctic Enema’ and ‘Electroshock Therapy’ – the names speak for themselves. And if this sounds too easy, there’s always The World’s Toughest Mudder, a 24-hour lapped version of the course.
THE IRON MAN TRIATHLON
Widely recognised as one of the toughest one-day sporting events, this triathlon consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile marathon. In that order. All in one go. Without a break. Oh, and with a 17-hour time limit. Easy. Also boasting worldwide status, there will most definitely be one near you, so sign up now!
THE DEATH RACE
If the name hasn’t set alarm bells ringing, the description will. This event, held annually in Vermont, is classified as an ‘adventure race’ and involves some rather eclectic challenges. Alongside navigation come slightly less traditional tasks, like eating a bag of raw onions and scaling a mountain to find a list of presidents’ names to be recited by heart later. Cruel and unusual punishment.
ANTARCTIC DEATH MARATHON
Another race with a warning of your potential demise in its name… If 100k (62.1 miles) isn’t already enough of a challenge, doing it in Antarctica’s sub-zero temperatures will give it that edge. With constant winds and temperatures reaching a bitter -20°C, and an altitude of roughly 2,300 feet, this race is hardcore, but at least you won’t get sweaty.
RACE ACROSS AMERICA
On first glance, a much less terrifying name… Read it again. Race ACROSS America. America is a big place, so this is a big race. 3,000 miles to be exact. But don’t worry; you get to use your bike. Except when you encounter the 170,000 feet plus of vertical climbing.
