Biopics are often a mixed bag. Between the poorly done, Ashton Kutcher we’re looking at you for that Steve Jobs portrayal, and the downright excellent, see below, they’re a genre that is certainly starting to re-establish itself. The early part of 2015 has seen some excellent additions to the genre, The Theory of Everything, the biopic focusing on Stephen Hawking and his first wife Jane, and Foxcatcher about millionaire wrestling sponser John du Pont. Here are 5 biopics from the past you absolutely have to see.
THE KING’S SPEECH (2010)

Covering the period of King George VI’s life where he learns to cope with a debilitating speech impediment in order to guide his country through World War Two. Colin Firth’s turn as the monarch was exceptional and the film bagged a number of Oscars to solidify its status as one of the great biopics.
SCHINDLER’S LIST (1993)

One of the most inspiring films to date, the Spielberg directed story of Oskar Schindler stars Liam Neeson prior to his transformation into one-dimensional action star. With 7 Academy Awards under its belt, the film is incredibly highly regarded and an absolute must-see.
RAGING BULL (1980)

It’s hard to find many ‘80s films better than Raging Bull, the sports-biopic starring Robert De Niro as Jake LaMotta and directed by Martin Scorsese, is one of the all-time greats. The acting and directing talent on show makes Raging Bull a film you need to watch immediately, despite it’s age, the innovation is clear to see.
THE SOCIAL NETWORK (2010)

Telling the story of Mark Zuckerberg’s rise to frame and charting Facebook from concept to thriving business. Jessie Eisenberg’s career defining performance as one of the world’s greatest innovators and Aaron Sorkin stirring script resulted in a captivating film and 3 Oscars.
MALCOLM X (1992)

An epic of the controversial and influential Black Nationalist Leader, Spike Lee’s Malcolm X is a rousing and almost perfect biopic. With a stunning score and evident French cinematic influence, the film tells the story of the leader’s rise from gang member to influential figure; Denzel Washington’s performance is fitting of his exceptional talents.
