10 things to watch on Netflix in January 2018

What's new on the streaming service this month?

Netflix just keeps getting better. This year, a film by the Coen Brothers, second season of the incredible Mindhunter and a new David Letterman talk show are just several of the gems coming to the streaming service. Mixing originals alongside existing titles, the platform is now an unparalleled wealth of entertainment – and this is what to expect this January…

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency: Season 2 - January 5

If you missed this frankly crazy show the first time round, we’d advise you watch the first season before diving into the second – not that you’ll completely understand what’s going on anyway. In these new episodes, Elijah Wood is left searching for the titular detective whilst on the run from the FBI. Throw in a ruthless bounty hunter, a powerful wizard and a rainbow-haired creature, and you can colour us confused.

A Futile and Stupid Gesture - January 26

In the 1970s and ’80s, National Lampoon’s success and influence created a new media empire overseen in part by the brilliant and troubled Doug Kenney. In this Netflix original film, Will Forte takes on the role, and stars alongside other comedy stalwarts such as Seth Green, Joel McHale and Thomas Lennon.

Lovesick: Season 3 - January 1

Lovesick has had a strange life. What began on Channel 4 as the questionably-named Scrotal Recall took what could have been a one-trick show and turned it into a genuinely earnest, funny romantic comedy. Taken over by Netflix for season 2, this third outing has now hit its stride, and continues to follow Dylan, who must get back in touch with every girl he has ever had sex with after finding out he has an STD.

The Belko Experiment - January 21

Despite being helmed by Guardians of the Galaxy auteur James Gunn, The Belko Experiment met with mixed reviews upon its release. Telling the tale of an office block, which is shut down and sees its employees pitted against one another in a battle to the death. Expect bloodied tape dispensers and some disturbing insights into the human condition…

Black Lightning: Season 1 - January 23

In the vein of Arrow and The Flash, Black Lightning sees a superhero come to the screen in a pulpy if entertaining TV show. In this show, Jefferson Pierce, who retired from his superhero persona Black Lightning nine years ago after seeing the effects it had on his family, is forced to become a vigilante again when the rise of the local gang The One Hundred leads to increased crime and corruption in his community.

The Polka King - January 12

The ever-enigmatic Jack Black stars in this Netflix Original Film as Jan Lewan, a Polish-American polka band leader Jan Lewan, who was imprisoned in 2004 for fleecing millions from investors through his polka-related activities. It sounds like a far-fetched plot, but one that is unbelievably true.

The Zero Theorem - January 19

Starring recent Gentleman’s Journal cover star Christoph Waltz, Terry Gilliam’s 2013 sci-fi film tells the story of a reclusive computer genius working on a formula to determine if life holds any meaning at all. It sounds like odd viewing, and it is, but the inimitable Waltz (eyebrowless in this role) keeps your eyes fixed to the screen for the whole movie.

Joy - January 25

The dream team of director David O. Russell and Jennifer Lawrence – of Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle pedigree – returns in this loose biopic of Joy Mangano, a businesswoman who created her own million-dollar empire. From a booking clerk for an American airline to a multi-million dollar mentor to young investors, Lawrence plays the role with heart and ambition – just as you’d expect.

The End of the F**king World - January 5

The title doesn’t mess about – and neither does the show. This tragically-dark comedy series tells the story of 17-year old psychopath James who meets new girl Alyssa at school. Cool and moody, she convinces him to embark on a road trip in search of her real father – and a better life.

Dirty Money - January 26

As part of a new series of Netflix original documentaries – another, Rotten, explores the disgusting world of food waste – Dirty Money explores scandal and corruption int he world of business. Using first-hand accounts from perpetrators and their victims, combined with rarely-seen video footage, this addictive series will keep you firmly on the edge of your seat.
