The Diary: Gentleman's Journal's inaugural New York Dinner
Stateside friends of the magazine joined us for a martini-fuelled dinner at Ella Funt in New York's East Village
- Words: Joseph Bullmore
What’s the best cure for transatlantic jet-lag? According to a recent Gentleman’s Journal event in New York’s East Village, it’s martinis so cold they stick to your fingers and steak frites by the metre. That was what the doctor ordered at our (soon-to-be-annual) New York Dinner, at least — a jolly meeting of expats and, um, pats, down in the handsome candlelit dining room of Ella Funt. Here, the likes of Olympia of Greece, Dana Brown, Callum Mullin, Marina Hambro, Luke and Anna Stopford-Sackville and Fred Castleberry enjoyed the free-flowing hospitality of owner Lounes Mazouz, surviving an onslaught of excellent courses and sudden margaritas to stomp onwards to an after-party at nearby ACME. Host-in-chief Harry Jarman, whose birthday it happened to be the night before, even found time to dust off a nifty speech about the Royal Navy. What’s New York-ese for ‘cheers?’ Hey, I’m drinkin’ here!
