Today is the 30th anniversary of Apple Macintosh, a company that has not only changed the face of technology, but also our language, activities, the way we think and live our lives. It is one of the most famous names and most recognisable logos on the planet but here are 10 things you didn’t know about Apple.
Macintosh was almost Bicycle
A Macintosh is not only a type of apple but also Jef Raskin’s favourite apple! At first, Macintosh was just a codename and Jobs tried to change it to his choice, Bicycle. However, the name stuck.

Everything you say to Siri is sent to Apple to be analyzed and stored.
The Legend of the 1984 Superbowl ad
Apple’s now famous 1984 Superbowl commercial was directed by Ridley Scott who also directed Gladiator and Alien. The advert – which featured IBM as Big Brother – is now considered a masterpiece and an influential turning point in Apple’s history.
With out Jonny Ive we might not have the iconic white Apple products
Apple’s design chief Jonny Ive was the one that pushed the idea of having white products. Steve Jobs was initially against it but was swayed when the colour was presented as ‘moon grey’.

Apple don’t trust anyone
In order to ensure there are no leaks in their company, both senior and new employees are secretly given fake projects alongside real ones. If the fake project leaks, they get the sack.

2001: A Space Odyssey was the inspiration behind the moniker ‘iPod’
Freelance writer Vinnie Chieco was the man behind the name ‘iPod’. He says, as soon as he saw the product he thought of the film. “Open the pod bay door, Hal!”
Apple actually has three co-founders
The lesser known Ronald Wayne (who set up Apple with Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak) actually created the very first Apple logo – Sir Isaac Newton sitting under a tree with an apple falling towards his head – which was briefly used in 1976. Ronald also sold all his shares in the company for $800. Today, they would have been worth $35 billion.
