What stylish people do differently to you

Style is infamously hard to define, it doesn’t begin and end with the wardrobe, but that’s definitely a key component. There’s a difference between being stylish and being well-dressed, however. Clothes don’t make the man, but they certainly have a say. If you’re regularly left behind in the sartorial stakes, in the office or elsewhere, these are the habits and tendencies that are separating those around you.

Invest in quality

Yes, you could buy a whole new wardrobe on a month’s pay check, but it’s not going to last particularly long. A good pair of jeans can last you years, possibly decades if you’re lucky enough not to have a fluctuations waist size. A quality suit is easily identifiable against a high street counterpart: the way the shoulder sits, the button positioning. A pair of shoes that are crafted, as opposed to coming off of a conveyor belt, won’t crack on first wear, they won’t lose their shape within a month. So, you see where we’re going with this.

Have a uniform to fall back on

There are days when you’re stuck for what to wear, but don’t let that drag you into a style rut. Establish a uniform to fall back on. Opt for something classic, but not boring. A soft shouldered navy blazer is cooly casual, but still put together — elevating a t-shirt and chino combination. Have a range of basic wardrobe staples to draw from, and you’ll never be stuck for an on point ensemble.

Have a tailor

Off the rack sizing isn’t reliable, it’s meant to fit the ultimate average man – a sum of the whole – everybody’s body shape is different in places. No body fits in everything that’s come straight off the rails. Have that jacket taken in, sleeves shortened and trousers taken up where appropriate to ensure a bespoke fit – even for the most simple of garments.

They’re unwaveringly confident

Confidence is key, it’s easy to say, far harder to obtain. You’ll never see a stylish man second guess his choice of attire, even to the simplest accessory. He’s picked them with purpose, not a fragile attempt at peacocking.

There’s a reason most of the world’s most stylish men stick to an outline of a timeless wardrobe – they’re not confident to drop in an orange double breasted blazer. Start simple — plain shirts, navy and grey suits, brogues – before graduating to double-breasts, intricate tie knots and double monk straps.

“A man should look as if he’s bought his clothes with intelligence, put them on with care and then forgotten all about them.” – Hardy Amies

Get regular haircuts

Your mane is as much a part of your outfit as your shoes. Get yourself in for regular (6 weekish) chop and you’ll avoid that rough around the edges scraggliness, maintaining a debonair appearance all year round.
