Mercedes-Benz, after three decades off, have brought back the off-roading icon donned by many would be explorers over the years. Mercedes-Benz World is to be thanked for this, which is importing the updated model of Steyr-Puch’s classic G-class into the UK. For the first time a diesel engine option has been added to the G Class and coupled with the right hand drive option, we are now spoiled for choice. No doubt the useful combo will result in plenty of sitings of the new 4×4 Gelaendewagen in many a driveway.

Laurence Graff, the world-famous diamantaire, had a dream which he has now realised by turning a winery on the edge of Stellenbosch into one of South Africa’s leading wine and holiday destinations. In a very short space of time this all-suite hotel and spa has received numerous accolades – for design, for horticulture, for food and, of course, for wine. The estate sits on the crest of a mountain pass between the country’s two main wine-growing areas – Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.

Many people who shoot would probably consider themselves a good shot, this is just the nature of the sport, and when you miss an easy bird there will always be some sort of excuse that you will no doubt share after the drive ends. The question is what really makes a good shot? We believe that a good shot has the ability to shoot high birds over and over again. A high bird is one that is considered over 45-50 yards above you. It is a well know fact, once the bird is over 40 yards away your shot to hit average will significantly decrease.

We Like – The Leica M Monochrom

Leica have brought us the first digital camera that has been designed exclusively for full-frame black and white photography. At £6,120 for a camera that only shoots black and white photography, you would be right in thinking that this is a little ridiculous. However Leica might have seen a market that is calling for this sort of camera. What makes the M Monochrom so special is whilst other digital cameras have monochrome filters, their filters take images on a colour RGB sensors. The Monochrom sports a newly designed 18 million pixel CCD sensor that doesn’t ‘see’ colours, in order to capture light in its purest form.

The Diary – 2 & 8 Launch Party

The 2 & 8 club at Morton’s has been the most talked about club opening this year. Last night the iconic Berkeley Square was transformed into a nightclub for the exclusive launch of Morton’s 2 & 8 Club. The guests list did not disappoint with the following all in attendance, Pippa Middleton, James Middleton, Ben Goldsmith, Amber Le Bon, Jodie Kidd, Anna Abramovich, Otis Ferry, Edie Campbell, Cressida Bonas and Jacobi Anstruther-Gough-Calthorpe. Guests nibbled away on the Marlon Abela prepared canapés washed down with Moet Champagne, Belvedere vodka cocktails and Asahi beer. DJ Sam Young hit the decks and got everyone on the dance floor, so much so that the night ended with an after party in the new art deco inspired basement nightclub. Expect to hear a lot more about this place.

First they released the teaser, but here we see the full length trailer of one of the most hotly anticipated films of the year, Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln. With none other than Daniel Day-Lewis staring as Lincoln, it has already been tipped for big things at the Oscars. In true Day-Lewis style his portrayal of the U.S President is uncanny, and you can expect powerful lines, civil war battles scenes and all the makings of a true epic. “Government of the people, by the people, for the people”.

As far as we are aware it is not yet available in Britain, however it is available in the States for $2400. We say, definitely worth importing.

The Diary – The Smythson 125th Anniversary Cocktail Party

With Samantha Cameron as one of the hosts to last nights Smythson Cocktail party, the turn out was always going to be impressive. Guests include Mario Testino, David Gandy, Bryan Ferry and sons, Edie Campbell, Harold Tillman, Nicky Haslam and Natalie Massenet to name a few. It took place at Smythson’s newly re-lanched store on New Bond street, where guests enjoyed champagne and G&T’s and watched a live performance from Bryan Ferry, whilst his son Issac took to the decks. Outside there was a true to size papier-mâchié personalised Smythson cab for guests to graffiti to their hearts content.

The Balvenie Thirty, Aged 30 Years

Balvenie Scottish whiskey is unique, as it’s craft has not changed over century’s. The first spirit to come from Balvenie was on May Day back in 1893, so there is no denying that they know what they are doing, and this is shown by it’s smooth finish. The Balvenie Thirty (shown above) is a rare malt that is aged for Thirty years in American oak and sherry casks. After it’s long an patient wait, the Balvenie Malt Master, by the name of David Stewart, who celebrates his 50th year (making him the longest serving Malt Master in the industry), selects only the best casks. The Balvenie Thirty rolls across the palette with a dark chocolate and sticky marzipan flavour. On the nose, it has tones of honey, oak and orange peel. The finish is the highlight, with an exceptional smoothness and lingering sweetness. Definitely one for the cabinet.
