How to go sockless in style

The topic of going sockless is one that always draws debate. A large number of men are quite happy to ditch their cottons at any occasion, whereas others simply won’t leave the house without them. Whatever your opinion, as with many style-related issues, there are certain guidelines that should be considered if you want to pull it off successfully.

CONSIDER YOUR SURROUNDINGS

, Many people are of the view that going sockless is something that should never be done with formal wear. Of course, rules are made to be broken but it’s important to remember that a bare ankle will never look as smart, so if you are heading to the boardroom then it’s probably best to play it safe. If you work in a creative environment however, the rules of dressing in your office are likely to be less strict, so if the weather permits it, be sure to experiment now and again to keep those around you guessing.

WEATHER IS KEY

, Weather is undoubtedly the most important thing to consider when going sockless. A simple rule to remember is that if it’s sunny then it’s OK skip your socks in the morning, but if the weather is cold and wet that you absolutely are not. There is nothing worse than seeing someone who thinks they’re the epitome of style waltz around in the rain with his pale, hairy ankles protruding from the cuff of his trousers.

WHAT TO WEAR

, Whatever your opinion, when executed correctly going sockless can add an element of character and relaxed confidence to your look. The people who forgo socks most effectively are those who keep it simple and take cues from the stylish gents of the Mediterranean. Slim-cut chinos and loafers work particularly well, as do polo and Oxford cloth shirts upstairs. The cuffs of the trousers are important too, so stick to only a couple of rolls to avoid looking like you’re trying too hard. You should also consider investing in a few pairs of secret socks, to avoid any odor issues. It’s all about confidence at the end of the day, and if you’re comfortable going sockless then it’s likely you’ll pull it off with the best of them.
