It’s a Friday afternoon on the first properly sunny day of the year when Matt Smith answers his phone. Like the rest of London, he’s jazzed about the weather. “Isn’t today just gorgeous!” he sings, as he rushes around his Highgate home, getting ready to take his Irish terrier Bobby for a walk.

Smith acaba de regresar de Nueva York («Tío, ¡tienes que ir!»), donde pasó tres meses rodando Darren Aronofskyel próximo thriller policíaco de Caught Stealing («Fue una experiencia increíble rodarla») junto a Austin Butler («es un tipo encantador, encantador, y un actor maravilloso»). Smith tiene motivos de sobra para estar tan animado. Caught Stealing, en la que interpreta a Russ Miner, un punk de gatillo fácil en el Nueva York de los años 90, se estrena a finales de agosto y está impaciente por saber qué opina el público. Fue un look que Smith hizo suyo. «Hubo un momento genial en el que Darren me dijo: “Tienes permiso para ser un punk”, y yo pensé: vale, y simplemente [me convertí] un poco en punk durante una temporada», cuenta con naturalidad. «En realidad, esa fue una parte del proceso de [Aronofsky] que me encantó. Me encanta lo extremo del look. Todo el mérito es del equipo de maquillaje y peluquería de la película. Hicieron un trabajo estupendo y fueron muy creativos; como a mí me daba cierto reparo hacerlo, supieron animarme de la manera adecuada».

Becoming Russ wasn’t just a matter of changing his look. He describes an alchemy of sorts in establishing the sweet spot between merely understanding the character and channelling his essentiality. “I suppose you’re trying to dial stuff down after all the research that you do, and that might be listening to punk music, or reading a book on punk, or just creating this world that feels rich and detailed, and then you're trying to dial it down to whatever its essence may be. I suppose that lies between the script, the character and the actor, really. It's your job to sniff that out and make it interesting, or rather, make it truthful.”

Smith brings this interrogative approach to each of his roles, which vary widely – “I mean, one's an alien, one's a prince, one's a serial killer” – but he doesn’t have a one-size-fits-all technique to inhabiting a character. “I think it's [the actor’s] job to adapt to each individual circumstance and try and fit into the form of the thing as best as possible,” he says. He enjoys being kept on his toes. “You sort of ask yourself, okay, well, what’s required of me in this particular circumstance, and try to articulate yourself creatively as best as possible”. Smith is quick to acknowledge the privilege he feels at getting to do his dream job – “It’s something I feel happy to do every day” – but he admits that it’s still just that – a job. “If it's tough, it's meant to be tough. It's work, isn't it? At the end of the day, it's not always meant to be a jolly. Ultimately, you're there to work, to deliver something.”

Tal disciplina puede tener su origen en una juventud dedicada al deporte, concretamente al fútbol, a un alto nivel. «Creo que, tanto en el deporte como en el arte, hay sin duda ciertas habilidades transferibles. Y [con el deporte] hay habilidades que realmente puedes conservar, como la disciplina que desarrollas: cosas sencillas como ser deportista, llegar puntual, ser constante, estar preparado, haber dormido bien... En fin, todas esas cosas que aprendes como deportista desde joven. Sin duda, he podido trasladarlas al ámbito de la interpretación».

Existe una realidad alternativa en la que Smith no se convierte en la querida estrella de la pantalla que es hoy, sino en futbolista profesional. Nacido en Northampton hace 42 años, fue capitán del equipo juvenil del Leicester City, antes de que una grave lesión de espalda pusiera fin prematuramente a su carrera futbolística. «El caso es que el fútbol formaba una parte tan intrínseca de mi identidad que, cuando aquello cambió, pensé: “Dios, ¿y ahora qué?”. Siempre había sido Matt el futbolista, así que ¿qué era ahora?». Un profesor de teatro, que vio su potencial como actor, lo apuntó a varias producciones escolares, pero al principio Smith no se presentó. «Bueno, yo era futbolista, ya sabes. Te preocupa lo que van a decir tus amigos [cuando se enteren de que] Matt va a participar en un musical en el instituto. Eres joven».

His teacher’s persistence eventually paid off. “He phoned my mum and was like, ‘you've got to make him be an actor’. My mum had a word with me and said, ‘just do it’, and I did it, and then I realised that I actually really enjoyed it.” I can practically hear him shrugging down the phone at the straightforwardness of it all.

Tras estudiar arte dramático durante el bachillerato, Smith fue admitido en el National Youth Theatre. «Aquello fue un verdadero catalizador», afirma. «Si quieres ser actor, recomiendo de verdad que te apuntes e intentes entrar. Es una plataforma fantástica para los actores jóvenes y, en realidad, para la gente joven en general. Es una gran familia de la que formar parte. Y así fue como conseguí un representante y, bueno, di el salto al mundo profesional».

Smith has achieved more at this point in his career than the majority of actors will in their lifetimes. But he retains a restless energy and is hungry for more challenges. In March, he’ll start filming the highly anticipated third season of House of the Dragon, which he’ll be busy with until the end of October. “The scale of the show is really big and ambitious. It takes a lot of time to realise all of the elements. So it's not easy,” he says, before a quick addendum: “but it's a good challenge, and it's nice to be working at home, at least I'm not away from everyone for a big chunk of time”.

Este año también se estrenará la adaptación televisiva de la novela de psicodrama de Nick Cave La muerte de Bunny Munro, en la que Smith interpreta al personaje que da título a la obra, un vendedor ambulante adicto al sexo: «Siempre intento hacer cosas que me parezcan un reto, y esta parece estar fuera de mi zona de confort».

Pero, por ahora, es viernes por la tarde en la capital, brilla el sol y Smith está encantado de estar aquí. «Me encanta Londres. Creo que Londres es la mejor ciudad del mundo», dice con entusiasmo. «Sobre todo cuando llegan la primavera y el verano, la verdad es que es bastante difícil de superar». Y, dicho esto, se marcha con paso alegre para disfrutar del fin de semana.
