Watchmakers NOMOS Glashütte are blue sky thinkers

How do the midnight blue dials of their latest timepieces prove that the German watchmakers mean business?

The old Saxon town of Glashütte, which once did very nicely out of extracting iron ore from the surrounding Erzgebirge mountains, is now known the world over for quality, reliable and affordable watchmaking.

Recently, at London’s SalonQP, the German watchmaker revealed their new Neomatik Nachtblau series, made up of three models: the Metro Neomatik, Tangente Neomatik and Minimatik.

These new models are all linked and inspired by the brand’s favourite shade of blue which, in turn, is seen to represent of both the sea and the sky.

“Blue is the colour of infinity,” the company explains, “And, due to its more poetic, elegant, and refined character, it is also the colour that has been gradually superseding black in the timepieces of the Glashütte watchmaking company.”

But, beneath the blue, the design is just as impressive – as the three new watches also boast the brand’s in-house built caliber DUW 3001. Equipped with the NOMOS swing system, and measuring a mere 3.2 millimetres in height, this is not a movement to be messed with.

It gifts the range an extremely precise reputation, and the ability to be crafted in ways a bulkier mechanism simply wouldn’t allow. As such, the stainless steel cases of both the Metro and Tangente are just 6.9mm high, and all three watches feature a sapphire crystal back, so the DUW 3001 can be seen at work in all its glory.

Water resistant to a depth of 30 metres, the watches stay true to the blue of their dials and are truly at home underwater. Leather straps of Horween Genuine Shell Cordovan are hand-stitched and hardy and the pearled indexes and gold and green minute markers mean visibility is never an issue.

Elegant, dark, mysterious and masculine, Glashütte watches are versatile, sophisticated and, most surprisingly of all, not Swiss. But now they’ve conquered the sea and the skies, what next for NOMOS?
