Watch of the week: Montblanc Summit 2

Styled after the German brand's classical mechanical range this unisex smartwatch has been designed for high-flyers

Smartwatches are many in number. Some will chart your run, some simply measure your heartbeat, while others look the part but are not quite smart enough in our opinion.  On release the manufacturers go big on the technical jargon but many ultimately fail to deliver the goods.

What really measures the quality of wearable tech is how notably it improves your everyday life. Enter Montblanc.

What makes the Summit 2 so different?

Montblanc’s original Summit was a great piece of technology. But, with this new iteration, they have refined both design and tech to create something that truly does make every day easier.

Expect a smaller case size — now a unisex 42mm instead of the previous 46mm — and an all new chipset, the Snapdragon Wear 3100. Used for the first time in a luxury smartwatch — it allows you to do more for longer. You can use the watch on the time only setting for a whole week without needing a charge.

Why should I upgrade to the Summit 2?

One of our favourite features of this smartwatch is the Timeshifter. Designed specifically for frequent fliers, this innovative app provides you with personalised advice to help minimise jet lag, measuring your sleep pattern, chronotype and flight plan.

The information is based on research conducted for astronauts and elite athletes who hop from continent to continent for competitions — so you know you’re in safe hands. There’s also a built-in voice-activated translator that will help out after your jet touches down on the tarmac.

How has Montblanc updated the design?

Let’s talk looks. Styled after Montblanc’s ever popular 1858 collection, with their large distinctive crown, this is a smartwatch that may be at the cutting edge of innovation, but still manages to channel a vintage feel.

It’s also a truly unisex timepiece — with dial options that include the Bohème Date and Bohème Classic. There are 11 different interchangeable straps that, when paired with the various dial options, create a total of over 70,000 individual looks. Now that’s what we can personalisation.

What you need to know:

  • 42mm case size
  • 5 ATM water resistance
  • 8 GB memory
  • Google Pay compatible
  • Case options: Black DLC, bicolour steel, steel, titanium

GJ's verdict:

If you want the functionality that comes with the latest technology, but still prefer the styling of an elegant mechanical watch, then we may have found the perfect option for you.
