Watchmakers are going green. Many are recycling materials to create their intricate timepieces. Others are partnering with eco-charities and sharing their profits to benefit the natural world. Hublot, however, has taken the term a little more literally. The statement Swiss Maison may have strong links to actual sustainability — it ethically extracts Paraíba gemstones in Brazil’s Rio Grande region for its Big Bang watches, and has partnered with SORAI, a charity fighting the endangerment of rhinos — but our favourite of the brand’s green offerings must be this striking Classic Fusion King Gold.
With a satin-finished green sunray dial, this is a new signature spin on one of Hublot’s most popular watches. Lustrous and pearly, it changes colour depending on how you tilt the timepiece; shimmering from a fresh, vivid pine-green to a deep golden glow. In alligator leather, the strap pops almost as much as the dial itself, and is also lined with rubber — a popular choice for the brand of late, and one that walks this watch along the fine line between sports and dress styles.
With the golden case, it’s business as usual for this Classic Fusion King. The bezel features the six H-shaped screws we’ve come to expect from this line, and a gold crown and pushers finish off the silhouette. On the dial, gold-plated hands and satin-finished appliqué markers pull the whole package together. Inside the case, the brand’s HUB1143 self-winding chronograph movement ticks away, a dependable calibre with 42-hour power reserve and date that can be spied through a window at six o’clock. But, though the watch also delivers a 50-metre water resistance and 18-carat gold deployant buckle clasp, it’s still the dial that catches your eye; bold, hypnotic and very, very green.
