Is there anything better than a floor-to-ceiling window? Here at Gentleman’s Journal, we’ve got a soft spot for any property with this particular architectural feature, sweeping glass walls that allow you to lazily gaze from your bed out across your immaculately manicured garden.
Imagine our reaction, then, when we set eyes on Hopkin’s Yard. An open plan living room is all well and good, and the centrepiece of a wood-burning stove is indeed a conversation starter — but it’s those majestic floor-to-ceiling windows are what really swung it for us.
And, from ceiling to skirting board, the house has been imbued with striking, standout design. We especially like the feature wall in the entrance, decorated with a blue and silver fire motif. Push through those large wooden double doors onto that, and you’ll really feel as though you’ve arrived.
Thanks to the windows, the whole house is swimming in light. And they span throughout — not just confined as a feature wall of one room. As well as letting the light in, they also give residents an unrivalled view out, across the grounds and walled garden that includes a number of levels, pruned flowerbeds and a water installation.
The market town of Charlbury, where this modern house is situated, may seem a world away from the city-folk of London, but this is in fact countryside within reach. It’s just a short jaunt to Oxford, then a hop, skip and jump into London.
There’s even a playhouse built in the garden — in traditional Shire style — for those family-minded amongst you.
Overall, it may look small, but the four bedrooms and wide-open living spaces manage to give Hopkin’s Yard an airy feel — helped by the light that those glass walls lets in. Did we mention the floor-to-ceiling windows?
