The Overseas Dual Time from Vacheron Constantin is back in black

The Swiss manufacturer’s latest design update sees its sporty, sophisticated watch hit new monochromatic levels of cool

When Vacheron Constantin launched its Overseas Dual Time last year, the small everyday complication revolutionised the Swiss manufacturer’s most storied range. Compact and complicated, it introduced a sophisticated sports watch onto our wrists; at once elegant, monochromatic and extremely practical. But, for all our plaudits, there was one thing we couldn’t describe the Overseas Dual Time as: cool.

Thankfully, Vacheron is back in black with its new take on the Overseas Dual Time — and has remedied its ‘cool’ oversight several times over. With a new, seriously sleek black dial, the latest update to the model now has the edge to back up its excellent mechanism.

Behind the new black dial, the 5110 DT Manufacture self-winding movement is still reliably ticking away. It’s a calibre that offers simultaneous reading of two time zones, complete with date and day/night indications — features that make this the perfect travelling timepiece for globe-trotters and jet-setters alike.

And, in addition to your traditional central hand indications for local time, you’ll also find a fourth hand — eye-catchingly tipped with a red arrow, that displays your ‘home’ time. As expected, the two 12-hour zones are adjustable via the crown in both directions, meaning that whenever — and wherever — you land, you’ll always have the upper hand on any impending jet lag.

But this impressive movement pales in comparison to the deep, dark design of the dial. It was this glossy black update that caught our eye — not least because of its high levels of legibility. Translucent and lacquered, the contrasting display pops with luminescent 18-carat gold faceted hour-markers and hands — adding an unexpected touch of class to the sports-influenced design.

And, outside of the dial itself, there’s the hexagonal bezel of this 41mm case — a signature design cue emblematic of Vacheron’s Overseas collection. To finish the update, the ever practical, water-resistant watch also comes with three strap options. There’s a hardy rubber, traditional alligator leather and striking steel bracelet featuring satin-brushed links inspired by the brand’s Maltese cross. We’d suggest buckling up the latter — for there’s nothing like the shine of subtle steel to bring out the black magic of that dial.
