The Gentleman’s Journal pre-holiday grooming guide

Wanting to look your best for that holiday you've had in your calendar for over a year? We don't blame you; have a read of our grooming guide

If you’ve managed to book a holiday, we salute you. Truly: holidaying has been pretty hard to come by over the past year. And if you are jetting off to one of the world’s best hotels or a jaw-droppingly luxurious French Riviera villa this summer, you’ll want to make sure your appearance is pre-holiday ready.

“What is ‘pre-holiday ready’?”, we hear you ask. After all, surely a holiday will erase any stress-induced wrinkles and bestow a glowing tan? Well, that’s certainly true. But do you really want to step off that flight into the blazing sunshine with a pasty pallor courtesy of all those hours spent cooped indoors working from home; or with hair that’s totally unprepared to receive a holiday onslaught of chlorine, salt and sun; or with puffy eyes from a stress-induced lack of sleep?

We thought not. So we’ve curated a few ways to get yourself in that pre-holiday zone before you even set foot on that plane: to ensure your body is primed for all that sunshine, and to guarantee you’ll look the picture of sleekness, suavity and pristine grooming from the second your holiday starts.

No one wants to go on holiday with puffy, tired eyes

We’ve touched on this already; but honestly, do you really want to step onto the beach for the first time with eyes that look as though they haven’t seen a wink of sleep for a year? If the stress of living through a global pandemic has got to you, we’re not the slightest bit surprised. Frankly, it would be bizarre if your eyes hadn’t taken a hit.

But there’s no need to let that hit show up on holiday. Haekels knows how it is: their Eye Bright Contour is primed to combat the effects of polluted air and increased screen time with a formula that contains Kelp Bioferment: wave goodbye to dark circles and puffiness. Heath’s Eye Serum utilises Persian Silk Tree Extract and Hyaluronic Acid to hydrate, firm up and reduce the appearance of puffiness and dark circles; and Hawkins & Brimble has harnessed ingredients including Aloe Vera, Ginseng and Vitamin E to help you counteract the effects of gazing at your phone for far too long. It happens to us all.

Give your skin the moisturising treatment it deserves

If you’ve let your moisturising routine go over the past year, we’ll forgive you. After all, who’s going to be able to tell, via the blurry, pixelated realm of video calls, that your skin is looking a little tireder than it used to? But if you’re heading off on holiday, there’s no excuse. You’ll want to arrive with your skin looking fresh and healthy: and you’ll want it in good, nourished condition before it takes a serious hit of blazing sunshine.

Q&A’s Zinc PCA Moisturiser knows the drill: it provides antioxidants to keep skin looking fresh and clear (the ideal holiday look), while tackling the concerns that can arise from oily or combination skin. The Fellowship’s Advanced Moisturiser has an ingredient list that sounds like a holiday in itself: we’re talking Borage, Sea Buckthorn and Prickly Pear, all of which keep skin nice and hydrated. And Hawkins & Brimble’s Oil Control option is packed with Vitamin E to keep skin moisturised and healthy looking: just the thing for stepping off the plane into the sun.

Contrary to popular opinion, get the tan sorted before you leave

Trust us when we say: you don’t want to arrive at your holiday destination of choice looking as though you haven’t stepped outside for a year. That’s not a good holiday look. Instead, you want to be bronzed and glowing from the moment you make your way down to that pool: plus, we’d never advocate risking skin damage to get that perfect tan. If you get the tan sorted before you get there, you won’t have to spend your precious holiday hours trying to achieve that burnished glow. Sorted.

Tom Ford has your tanning needs taken care of with a Bronzing Gel: best used on the face, the water-based formula absorbs easily into the skin, and it’s packed with anti-ageing and antioxidant benefits. The Grey’s option is a little pricier, but we reckon it’s worth it; it’s a gradual glow (no chance of stepping out of the bathroom looking like a Trump impersonator) and the Agnus Castus Extract happily rejuvenates the skin. And if the very idea of self-tanning terrifies the life out of you, opt for a subtle Tinted Moisturiser: courtesy of Warpaint.

Get your hair primed and ready for those holiday conditions

However much time and attention you think you’re already giving your hair, it could always use a bit more; especially if it’s about to succumb to the aforementioned holiday battering ram composed of salt, chlorine and sun. Give your hair the weapons it needs to defend itself against such drying, parching enemies, and you’re far less likely to end up with hair like straw while you’re on holiday. No one wants hair that looks like straw. It’s not a good look.

The Fellowship are ready and waiting to strengthen your hair with the aptly-named Strengthening Shampoo, which boasts an enviable composition of Amino Acid Blend, Charcoal and Coconut. That’s the hair on your head sorted; but if you’re sporting a beard this summer, don’t forget to nurture that beard hair: Murdock’s Beard Moisturiser will soften both the beard and the skin underneath, while Ruffians’ Argan Beard Oil is packed with natural nourishing oils to nourish and maintain a healthy beard and fresh skin.

Reap all the benefits of some dedicated pre-holiday manscaping

We’ve given precedence to the many benefits of manscaping before; and if you don’t want to step out onto the beach with scraggly, unshaven body hair, we’d recommend taking a refresher on the finer points. We’re in no doubt that you’ll want to look sharp and sleek well before you get on that plane: and eliminating unwanted chest hair, smoothing out those shoulders or keeping those nether regions in check are an excellent place to start.

If you’re first and foremost in need of a really good piece of kit, Panasonic’s ER-GB80 Trimmer should be just the thing: it’s an all-in-one device geared towards full-body grooming, so your beard, hair and body should be in tiptop, hair-free state. If you’re already kitted out but can’t seem to prevent that post-shave sore skin, Heath’s Post Shave Repair has you sorted; it’s a balm with Allantoin and Aloe Vera, guaranteed to soothe any problem areas. And if ingrown hairs are making their unwelcome presence known, Tend Skin’s Ingrown Hair Solution will reduce the appearance of said hairs while also reducing razor burn and redness. No need to take those ingrown hairs on holiday with you.
