What style lessons can you learn from the best-dressed men at Cannes 2017?

Red carpet. Black tie. Take note.

The Cannes Film Festival celebrated its 70th Anniversary this year – with all the glitz and glamour you’d expect. With A-listers the likes of Jeremy Renner, Jake Gyllenhaal and Josh Kaye gracing the red carpet, and serving up their own slices of sartorial elegance, there are lessons to be learnt in everything from traditional tuxes to summer suiting.

So, cast your eye to the French Riviera and let us assist you in refining your summer dressing right down to the smallest accessories. Because, if there’s one thing to take away from this most glamorous of gatherings – asides from the debut screenings of the world’s most anticipated films – it’s the style cues set to dominate the year to come.

When it comes to Cannes, there’s no doubt that the women of the 70th Film Festival arrived in glamour and sparkle – leaving the gargantuan task of living up to expectations squarely at the feet of their male counterparts.

But what better way to keep things cool than with an understated and timeless classic. We’re talking about the black dinner suit, of course – the red carpet uniform of any discerning gent, and worn this year to perfection by Ben Stiller and Will Smith. Our Cannes style tip to elevate yourself above your peers? Always opt for a self-tie bowtie (this isn’t a high school prom, you should have learned to tie a bowtie by now.)

The navy dinner suit has seen a resurgence in popularity thanks to Hollywood’s best – as seen at the 2017 Oscars, and has quickly established itself as a timeless necessity, not only for the red carpet.

Josh Kaye looked immaculate in Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello where the contrast satin black peak lapel leaned towards modern sophistication. And both Jake Gyllenhaal and Paul Dano looked just as suave in shawl lapel navy dinner suits. Bravo, gentlemen – we’re taking black, shawl-lapelled inspiration.

Whilst the dinner suit dominated the red carpet during the week-long festival, myriad photocalls and daytime premiers meant A-listers like Jeremy Renner had to perfect their summer suiting style.

So gentlemen, quite literally follow suit by losing the tie, and instead opting for a chambray cotton shirt, cotton or linen suit and colours that will compliment the Mediterranean, not the office. Taking a leaf out of Cannes’ best-dressed will no doubt serve you well on your next summer get away – where comfort and sophistication under the sun is key.
