The protective running trainers that’ll help you go the extra mile

We can’t all be Mo Farah, but we can try. Getting good at running isn’t something that’s going to happen overnight, but wearing the right kit will make a huge difference. Have you ever laced up, hit the road and started out with a good pace, only to be slowed down by aching knees, painful shins or feet so sore that you can’t actually carry on?

Any seasoned runner will tell you that one of the biggest issues with these kinds of pains will come from the shoes you wear. Anything flimsy and soft-soled is going to completely ruin your flow, not to mention your joints. While this type of trainer might look the best, they’re pretty well guaranteed to ruin any progress you’ve made on the track thus far. You need to understand pronation, aka the way your foot rolls inward when you’re on a run. Everyone’s different, some people overpronate and some people underpronate, so if a pair of trainers works for your flatmate, they might not work for you.

There are a couple of key things to consider when you’re looking into the perfect protective footwear, all of which are present in the below picks. First, look at the height of the sole. Generally, something that’s got a thinner sole is going to be worse for your feet. Then, think about ankle support; your trainer needs to come right to the bottom of your ankle bone rather than lower. And worst of all, if you’ve run over 100 miles in your trainers, you need to chuck them out. Trainers wear away more and more with each step you take, even if you’ve only gone on a 1km run, so buying a new pair is pretty well guaranteed to solve all of your issues.
