Property of the Week: Portland Place

In a prestigious location, this period property has a varied and vivid history

In the late 18th century, when the Duke of Portland wanted a street designed, he called upon the unrivalled talents of Robert and James Adam – famed Scottish Architects whose influence can today still be seen in British cities from London to Glasgow.

Portland Place, as the street became to be known, originally ran north from the gardens of a detached mansion called Foley House in Marylebone, and its width was said to be influenced by a condition of the Duke’s tenant, Lord Foley, that stipulated that his views to the north would not be interfered with.

Several years later, Portland Place was incorporated into the royal route. A little after that, plans to create a third ‘circus’ – after Piccadilly Circus to Oxford Circus – named Regent’s Circus, to be built at Portland Place, were scrapped. Decades later again, the iconic street survived much of the World War II bombing London endured. And today, a piece of this prestigious thoroughfare could be yours.

Situated within a prestigious portered mansion block on the eastern side of Portland Place, Carter Jonas and Savills are offering an exceptional lateral apartment on one of London’s most historical streets. In excess of 3,300 square feet, the property is meticulously well-planned by one of London’s best interior designers to ensure it is just as impressive inside as it is out.

An generously-sized entrance hall adorned with period features greets you as you enter, and is flooded with natural light – a rare find in London. Maintaining its signature elegance and charm throughout, the property boasts fifteen windows, high ceilings and original period features.

And, as well-planned as the property itself is, its position in London is just as advantageous. Superbly located in the heart of London, the portered building is moments away from Marylebone High Street, Regents Park and Oxford Street – meaning that transportation is extremely efficient in this area, with Great Portland Street Station just 200 metres away and constant bus services operating within minutes of the flat.

Other perks for residents include exclusive access to eight acres of private gardens – Park Crescent and Park Square Gardens – which themselves include a lawn tennis court, children’s play area and a foot tunnel connecting the two.

Carter Jonas (020 7486 8866) and Savills (020 3527 0400) are offering this Portland Place property on a long lease at £8.75m.
