There are few homes with quite such a Hollywood pedigree as Pierce Brosnan’s Malibu retreat. Known as Orchid House, the Thai-inspired compound was once the setting for our own cover shoot with Brosnan, who graced the cover of Gentleman’s Journal back in 2021. Now, however, the actor is preparing to part ways with the property he and his wife, Keely Shaye Smith, have called home for more than two decades. And while it may seem an unusual moment to sell a house designed with sustainability in mind, Brosnan has admitted that the increasing threat of wildfires and the realities of life on California’s coastline have prompted a change of heart.

Set directly on Malibu’s Broad Beach, the estate occupies more than an acre of prime oceanfront real estate, with around 117ft of beachfront and uninterrupted views across the Pacific. Inspired by the couple’s travels in Thailand, the house was designed by architects Ralph and Ross Anderson and conceived as something of a private tropical resort. The result is an impressive blend of handcrafted timber, sweeping glass doors, courtyards and lush planting, with the ocean never far from view.

Inside, the scale is suitably Bond-worthy. The main residence offers five bedrooms and 14 bathrooms, alongside a cinema with tiered seating, gym, spa, art studio, recording space, two bars and a temperature-controlled wine room. Outside, a saltwater pool sits among tropical gardens, while generous terraces and beachfront decks provide ample opportunity for the sort of long, languid afternoons that Malibu does particularly well.

Brosnan’s commitment to the environment is woven throughout the property, too. Solar panels power the main residence, pool and guesthouse, while energy-efficient lighting and a low-flow water system help reduce consumption. It is a fittingly considered approach for an actor who has long been an advocate for environmental causes, even if the very landscape the house was designed to respect has now become one of the reasons for leaving.

For Brosnan and Smith, Hawaii has increasingly become home. The couple now divide their time between Malibu and a quieter three-bedroom cottage on Kauai, complete with chickens and a yurt where Brosnan paints. After more than 25 years on the California coast, the Malibu chapter may finally be coming to an end. The asking price? A suitably cinematic $100 million.
