Property of the Week- Burrow Farm Estate

Nestled within a secluded 500-acre valley near Henley-on-Thames, this private estate is the perfect retreat for a week or more, offering complete seclusion and the opportunity to reconnect in total privacy.

Privacy has become one of life's greatest luxuries. So when the need arises to retreat, reset and disappear for a while, few places answer the brief quite like Burrow Farm Estate.

Hidden within 500 acres of the Hambleden Valley, just outside Henley-on-Thames and less than an hour from Central London, this remarkable private estate offers something increasingly rare: complete seclusion without compromise. Shielded behind private gates, hidden from public sightlines and accessed only via a long winding driveway through ancient woodland, Burrow Farm feels worlds away from modern life.

Previously inaccessible to the public, the estate has been meticulously reimagined as one of Britain's most exclusive private retreats. Available either in its entirety or as individual residences, Burrow Farm comprises six beautifully designed properties sleeping up to 40 guests, creating what feels less like a collection of holiday homes and more like your own private English village.

At its heart sits the magnificent Grade II-listed Great Barn, a soaring sixteenth-century space where everyone naturally gravitates together. Cathedral-like in scale yet wonderfully inviting, it comfortably seats 32 guests and comes equipped with a staffed bar, concert grand piano, cinema facilities, karaoke system and nightclub-quality sound system, making it just as suited to long family suppers as unforgettable celebrations stretching late into the evening.

The six residences have each been individually designed, balancing historic character with contemporary luxury. Burrow Farmhouse and The Chicken House connect directly to the Great Barn, while The Shoot Lodge, Victory Barn, Keepers Cottage, Barley Cottage and the aptly named Top of the World shepherd's hut each enjoy their own distinct personality. Rich textures, bespoke furnishings and carefully curated artwork are paired with uninterrupted views across woodland, parkland and rolling valleys, creating interiors that feel both refined and deeply comfortable.

The beauty of Burrow Farm, however, lies in the fact that there is never any need to leave. When the estate is hired exclusively, guests enjoy the services of an on-site chef and dedicated team, transforming the property into a fully serviced private compound. Days can be spent walking through ancient woodland, spotting the hundreds of deer that roam the estate, enjoying clay pigeon shooting, fishing, mountain biking or simply sitting amongst the formal gardens overlooking the valley below.

Those seeking a little more activity will find a heated outdoor swimming pool, immaculate all-weather tennis court, croquet lawn and Technogym-equipped fitness space, while the Grade II-listed Victory Barn has been transformed into an extraordinary games barn complete with pool, table tennis, arcade machines, pinball, darts and family entertainment. During summer months, the estate's hillsides erupt into colour as seventeenth-century wildflowers blanket the valley.

Should you wish to venture further afield, Burrow Farm offers experiences few country estates can rival. Guests can arrive by private helicopter, cruise the Thames aboard the beautifully restored 1935 launch Myrtle, or explore the surrounding countryside in the estate's Range Rover Autobiography. Even elevenses have been elevated, with the aptly named Top of the World viewpoint offering panoramic views across the Thames Valley.

While Burrow Farm makes for an extraordinary family escape, it has also been conceived as an exceptional venue for private entertaining. The estate hosts only a handful of weddings, corporate retreats, shooting weekends and celebrations each year, with the Great Barn accommodating seated dinners for up to 70 guests and receptions of 150. Beyond that, the sprawling grounds provide limitless scope for bespoke marquees, outdoor feasts and celebrations designed entirely around their hosts.

There are country houses, and then there are country compounds. Burrow Farm belongs firmly in the latter category. Every detail has been considered, every experience carefully curated and every stay entirely bespoke. Whether gathering generations of family beneath one roof, hosting a milestone celebration or simply disappearing from the world for a week, it is difficult to imagine a finer expression of the modern English country estate.
